I would say a Portuguese Water Dog, they are beautiful and they don't shed(very little like a poodle or Bichon). Maybe you could go on the akc's website and get a feel for different breeds though, and if you wanted to get a mix from the shelter you would know about what kind you would want. Just remember to consider how much space you have for a big dog, but I hope that if you are asking for a dog that is very large that you already have considered the space and have it. Good luck with finding just the right dog.

Well, a few breeds that fit some but not all of the requirements:
Great Danes are nice yet protective, have a big dog bark to scare intruders, and do well with small dogs (except when in the awkward teenage stage when they don't control their limbs very well). Around 100-130 lbs., but they shed an average amount.
Great Pyrenees are good with the family, wary of strangers, very protective of the property. Great with small dogs, 90-110 lbs., but shed a lot.
Giant Schnauzers are 90-110 lbs., and they don't shed. But they are very dominant, excellent guard dogs but not good for every owner. Not sure how they are with small dogs.

I would suggest an Australian Cattle Dog (also known as Queensland Heeler). They are excellent watch dogs and protective of their owner and property. However, if they do bite, they always go for the heels of the person (this is an innate trait from herding cattle). At least you know that someone will be frightened away but not unduly harmed. They are very active, love to play, will follow wherever you go without trying to run off and disappear. They alway want to have their eye on their master. Highly intelligent breed.
Because they have Dingo blood in them, they have a tiny bit of a 'wild dog' look, which is often enough to frighten people away. They almost always get along well with dogs that are a member of the family.

Almost any dog will protect its owner as long as they have a good relationship. Actually really huge dogs do very poorly in protection sports which are dominated by medium sized breeds from the herding and working groups. As far as non-shed most breeds shed to some degree and normally the less they shed the more time you need to put into maintenance of the coat stripping, clipping or otherwise removing the dead hair or you had end with a huge matt that used to be your dog.

I have a rottweiler- pit bull (i know they have a bad reputation) and he is the best guard dog ever. He would never actually hurt anyone but he's very protective of his house and his family... he has a very intimidating bark that I think would keep anyone that didnt know him away. The trick dogs like him are to get them when they're puppies and get them neutered as soon as you can. They are notorious for being mean dogs because, if you're not going to breed them, they can't release testosterone and thats why they "snap". I could never ask for a nicer more attention-hogging dog. We even got a little boston-terrier when he was about 2 years old and she would terrorize him- and he didn't mind at all.

relies upon on what you imply by potential of shelter canines. Are you wanting a canines which will shelter your loved ones and bark whilst somebody comes yet continues to be friendly to human beings then i say a boxer or pitbull or rotties becuase the are EXTREAMLY dependable to thier familys yet in addition are friendly to others. they are great with young toddlers and maximum do great with cats. whilst you're wanting a shelter canines which will assault each and every physique who steps on your backyard i could recomend a effective alarm device and not a canines.

A German Shepperd is a wonderful family friend and guard dog, but you have to be very careful with this breed because of their territorialism.. they aren't as trusting of strangers.. hence, why they are good guard dogs. You just have to make sure they obey you if a new person comes around.
I grew up with Australian Shepperds.. they are by far, my favorite breed, they are a great guard dog in the sense that they will bark anytime they hear someone coming to the door or rumaging around your property.. but the males may not always be a protector when the stranger gets inside. They turn to putty immediately because of their friendliness. The best Aussie guard dog is a female. Best Wishes!

A real personal protection dog is a big liability and needs a lot of maintenance training. They also typically cost a minimum of $5000+. 95% of people who say they want a guard dog or protection dog really just need a large dark colored dog that barks as a deterrent. A black lab actually will fit the bill and you can get these from your local shelter.

I agree with the first reply, a dog is a living creature not a security system. If protection is what your looking for, try another avenue!
