If you buy from a reputable breeder (one who can show the hip & elbow certificates and character certificates and show grading cards - better still, a Breed Survey Report for each parent - and who gives you a written Guarantee) the pup will either already have a registered name, or you will be told a pattern that the name must fit (usually that it must have a particular first letter) and several possibilities will be offered to you if you can't quickly think one up on your own..

If you have a choice of names, keep these "rules" in mind:
(1) It must be easy to make a deep-voiced growl with.
(2) It must be easy to make high-pitched & attractive to the dog so that he will want to come when called.
(3) Think ahead to when he will be a dignified adult instead of a clownish pup, so NO "froofroo" names.

I prefer 2-syllable names (although both my first 2 dogs were called "Pal", back when I was a child), but if you can make a 1-syllable word sound attractive, fine.
If you have a friend with a pooch, get his/her permission to try alternating between a growled " NO, Ace" and a high-pitched "C'mon, Ace!", and repeat with the other names you are considering. Because the friend's pooch isn't yours, it won't worry that you've got its name wrong, it will react purely to your tone-of-voice.

In my country, registering is cheapest in the first couple of months, and gets either expensive or impossible much past a year old. You didn't say which country you are in, so you'll need to look up the Registration Regulations in the web-site of your country's Kennel Club. If you are a Yank, the only one that counts is the AKC, the others are rebels with no recognition anywhere.

The name should be based on the dog's personality. For example, when my 2 yr old male was a pup, he used to run into walls and bang his head, and seemingly not feel a thing. Hence the name Rocco....because his head is as hard as a rock. Wait till you get the pup...interact with him...the name will come to you.

My wife had a GSD named Bear when we met. He's long since dead. We now have a black GSD I named Titan. Titan...because he is HUGE.
