I have 6 halogen puck lights that I'm not fond of in my kitchen. I would like to switch them all out for undercabinet fluorescent lighting. There is a transformer for the puck lights. Can I just cut the wires, connect to new ones, and switch out the units? Or do I have to rewire all the lighting? The wires seem to be covered with a mesh, not plastic.

First, thank you everyone. But I need some clarity: does the rewiring need to be done from the transformer (which I understand I won't need when I make the switch to the new fl. lights) to the new flsct units? Or just splice the flsct unit wiring onto the halogen unit wiring that's coming out of my kitchen walls? Thanks again.

The fluorescent units will need 110 volts. That should be the supply voltage to the transformer for the halogens. Assuming that the halogens are switched on the 110 volt supply, you can take out the transformer and just extend your wiring from there to the new fluorescent following the code for any splices you make.

The puck lights are low voltage. So you would need to rewire for the 120 volt fluorescent fixtures. That can be done from the circuit that feeds the existing puck light transformer.
