Hmmm, well, I would start by saying that my dog is conscious, but not aware -- or at least not self-aware in the way I would define it. So awareness is somehow a step up.

For me it would be difficult to point out a clear difference in my understanding of Awareness and Consciousness. Consciousness for me is like another name for God .... probably Awareness is more personal for me and thus more limited as a concept. Words cause confusion and rarely help when perhaps someone is getting near enlightenment imo As to " Do Masters differentiate between the two " How can one answer such a question if one is not a Master. A Master will know everything that's needed for the purpose of their incarnation and presumably know how to best communicate with their disciples and what words if necessary to use. I have read that deep Theta Sleep is like Samadhi without being aware of the joy/ bliss. Dream sleep is not so detached from normal consciousness I would guess and could at best be a conduit for understanding such concepts........ maybe :)) Sai Ram

What an interesting question. Apparently there is quite a debate on this subject. If you search on google you will see a slew of information about it.
I think consciousness means being aware?
Someone answered that awareness is knowing that you are awake. I agree with that. So if we break it down if you are NOT conscious you will NOT be aware. However, if you are NOT aware you could still be conscious. So there seems to be a dichotomy between the two terms. Although they mean similar things. I think though we can debate on this subject till we are blue in the face and finally come to the conclusion that we can utilize both terminology interchangeably.
There is however, something in your mind that triggered your interest on this subject. Are you becoming AWARE of something?
Thank you for an entertaining question.

In my opinion, consciousness is a physical thing. Say for example, someone hits you in the head and you fall down unconscious. That means that you don't have any perception of what's around you.
When you "wake up," that means you are conscious. Just like when you go to sleep at night and wake up.
Awareness is being in "the know" if you will. For example, "I was not aware that he got a new haircut." Or, "I was really aware of the fact that there's a storm coming."

This is just my opinion:
Awareness is as it sounds--Knowing of, and being aware of, something. Most of the time this can be of right and wrong, or what society can deem proper.
Consciousness is completely different. This is the gut feeling or instinct that differentiates between good and evil, benevolence and maliciousness. Its different for every human being, but it also is bred into every person. It is that part that talks to you, like the angel on your shoulder, that you cannot explain, support, or sometimes even identify. You just know that it is there and you have to listen to it.
Hope this helps!

A good question. It is like the difference in listening, and hearing. Hm, a very good question, because it is hard to answer.
I would say that consciousness is merely the state of wakefulness. Awareness is the state of uninhibited attentive perception. The Japanese use the word Satori to represent this.

I think awareness means you are conscious and you perceive the physical world around you. You may also be aware of the social world around you.
Consciousness means that you are aware of your own self and your role as a physical and social being in the world. It's one level of abstraction beyond awareness, because if you are aware, you don't have to distinguish between self and not self, while you do if you have consciousness. (I'm not making a moral judgment here.)

The words are synonyms.
Awareness is of English origin, consciousness is of Latin origin.
They came from different languages but have the same meaning.

I think of consciousness as just in a state of ongoing thought/existance where as awareness to me indicates a focus of thoughts on things external to one's own consciousness.

To me, in the context I think you're referring to, consciousness is just being physically awake, as opposed to unconscious, i.e. being comatose and dead to the world around you. Whereas awareness, to me, means a greater level of knowledge and/or understanding of what is happening around you than just being conscious. They are just my first thoughts after reading your question and I don't even know why I think that!
