My Boston Terrier is pretty smart in my opinion.

I agree that German Shepherds are very intelligent too!

If you do a search for "smartest dog breed" on the internet, you will find more often the Border Collie is listed as the smartest breed of dog. The reason they are considered so intelligent is their ability to problem solve, which they need to be able to do when they are working stock (sheep, cattle, ducks, etc...). They need to be able to handle a situation on their own, especially if the handler is sending them out several hundred yards to fetch the herd.

But this intelligence means they NEED daily mental stimulation, not just exercise, to be a happy dog. Most people get a BC and soon realize the dog is bored and becoming destructive in their home as a result of that boredom. So most buyers of BCs, who haven't done proper research learn the hard way that their intelligence is a double edged sword and requires tons of effort and work from them.

I don't really think it's just a breed thing, my sister has three labs and everyone is a different level of "smart" I just think some dogs no matter what the breed just tend to be smarter. I had a german collie mix who would never bring his toy back and no matter what we did he would eat his poop, I still loved that dog stinky breath and all lol. We now have a Bichon Frise and a Shih Tzu, both are potty box trained and never needed to be taught to fetch, I just think some dogs will pick up on things faster, so in my opinion there is no smartest breed just smartest dog, which is my Bichon( :) lol) because every time I lose something(and that's often)all you have to do is ask him where it is and he can blind retrieve it something I NEVER taught him to do. But everybody know in their heart that THEIR dog is SMARTEST, right?

I Believe there is no"smartest breed" as all dogs were bred for specific puposes. Even though you can train any dog to do anything, I beleive a dog will truly shine when it is performing its original job. There are also so many breeds of dog.

A study of basic intellegent thought revealed the Border Collie as the breed most capable.

However, I disagree.
Not meaning to disrespect any BC's!

I believe any dog, with correct training and socialization has the ability to be what we would consider "smart" for a dog. (except maybe Greyhounds, I have had them my entire life and from puppies...they just seem "slow", yet they run so fast!)
