I like watching the rats run around on the tracks and then scramble into their holes when the train approaches.

Yes, for a lot of the same reasons Tiger Lily stated. NYC isn't even in the top 50 cities when it comes to violent crime, hell Omaha Nebraska has more violent crime. NYC has this huge stigma of being a bad place but the people there on the streets are really some of the friendliest I've ever been around in a big city and really helpful. Now, I personally have never used the subway because it's not exactly wheelchair friendly when compared to the cabs or the metro in DC but I wouldn't worry nearly as much as I would in Detroit.

impatience.....living in this city....we like to get things done fast and quick.....I tend not to get to the edge until the train begins to run into the station. Very dangerous move, and I do not recommend people doing this but most people leave a gap open in front of them when the train heads in , giving you the opportunity to walk through that gap and take first shot at the door. This helps a lot during the rush hour.
Usually....I pace back and forth from two points when the train takes too long to come in.
Subway system here is pretty outdated compare to other train systems worldwide. Most European systems have signs telling you exactly when the next train is coming, others have TV's with news (similar to NY1 here) within the stations.....

Hey, I do it too. The problem, New York subway is not like other cities with modern subway systems, or cities with older subway systems that are upgrading to the modern age. Some stations on the NYC subway don't have PA systems so, rider don't know if a train is delayed, or is late. So we tent to look down into the tunnel to see the light from the train coming. Just be careful no one pushes you off the platform.

Heck...I do it! LOL
But I only do it when it seems as if a train is taking FOREVER getting to the station (about 10 minutes is my tunnel peek time). Until they upgrade to a system (like they have on the "L" line in the Manhattan stations) where a readout will tell you how long a train is taking to arrive at a station, we'll just keep on peeking!

haven't we all did that at least once in our lives?
i admit i do that sometimes especially when i'm late. anxiety issues maybe, but for some reason it makes me feel better when i peek and see the train coming instead of standing and seeing it when it passes me.

Well, I think everyone is anxious. Its also like no one socializes so something stimulates their mind for a brief second.
