Just guessing here, of course, but I'd bet on Thomas Jefferson, John Locke, and Gallileo. I also suspect that Voltaire actually was an atheist and just didn't dare admit it.

People that didn't really believe, but were only going along with a societal norm/tradition.

We can't know who those people are, but I would guess some of the more nasty "Christians" in history, like slavers.

If you are saying this because you think that since we have found out more, they would have been smart enough to reject it today, I disagree. We haven't found anything to prove or disprove it. It's still just people choosing what they want to believe or reject.

A fragmented statement is now considered a question? Sounds more like a Jeopardy topic...."I will take 'Famous people from history who were believers/agnostic, but today would probably be atheist, or vice versa' for 600 please, Alex."

Although it is an interesting thought experiment, it's impossible to pull someone out of their sociological context and put them in ours. We can never know whether Jefferson, Madison, and Lincoln would today be open atheists. After all, they were politicians, and they wanted to be elected.

I think it's fair to put any Deists among our Founding Fathers in this category. Jefferson definitely!

your saying that there are people from history who used to say they were believers out of fear just because it was WAAY back in the day, but would now say "im an atheist" because it's more acceptable.

this question can't be answered, they were believers because of the way they were raised and things that happen in thier lives. just as today people are religous or not, mostly because they were raised as such or something happened in thier lives to make them that way.

I fail to see a question because you are missing an interrogative.
