That is a crappy thing to do. I wouldn't go if I didnt want to. If you do want to go, what's the problem? Not getting a gift card isn't the end of the world.

The reason many companies are doing this is because if they give them the cards many workers will go home rather than participate. The company has fronted who ever is serving the meal a certain guarantee of people that will be there. If that many don't come the company then will be charged more for the ones that did come, and a penalty for the ones that don't. Go to the thing, sometimes you end up having a better time than you think you will. If there is drinking, one drink is social, two okay, more and you can be setting yourself up for trouble. Police departments are aware of these company parties and know many don't control their drinking. The cops patrol those ares looking for someone leaving a company party a little too happy. If you decide you don't want to take any chances, (I wouldn't, I stick with coffee or sodas) and they encourage you to drink simply say your a designated driver, or something like I'm really a light weight when drinking, I think I had better pass, but thanks for offering.
Be sure to say thanks to your supervisor, and any of the top people you might deal with. (A couple Brownie points, and the right thing to do). What the devil, a free meal and a gift card even if it's $20.00 [ it's more than you had], brownie points and all for a couple hours of your time. Can't beat it.
Merry Christmas

The company is promoting attendance. I book parties often for my company and we pay per plate and to book certain venues must be able to gaurantee we will have x number of people attending or x number of dollars spent to reserve the venue. Look on the bright side some companies don't even give a gift card. Go to the party have a good time, trust me it will be noticed if you do not attend. When you attend make sure to thank your boss once when you get the gift card and again before you leave the party thank them for the wonderful dinner and the gift. You will be remembered for it.

First time I've ever heard of holding someone hostage so that you can give them a gift!

If I didn't want to go to the meal, I probably wouldn't want their gift card, either. Or, hey, just save the cost of the meal, which will probably be somewhat dismal anyway, and just give everyone a bigger gift card!

Ok, it sounds like they want to encourage attending to promote social interaction and comraderie after hours. If you don't want to be socialable, interact or share time with co-workers that is your choice. I wouldn't miss a holiday outing!

But, if the company presents you with a gift for your cooperation throughout the year, why stop cooperating now?

Just go and thank everyone who took part in the event's planning to show your appreciation. Thank the boss twice (once at the presentation, once at the end of the party) for the card and that will go a long way in the year ahead.

If you are just one of those "anti-social" types or hate your co-workers or just hate Christmas parties (that's holiday parties for the negative types) then don't go....spend time looking for a job that allows you to work from home every day.

Have fun at the party!! (of best of luck in your new career!)

Well, if you want the gift, then you have to go. Nothing wrong with that. They are just trying to encourage people to go-I bet it works.

Just my opinion.
