It bothers me sometimes, i mean, i never say happy chanukah to people that i dont know are jewish. the truth is, it's never going to stop. if somebody says merry xmas, just say happy holidays to you too. you might not want to say happy chanukah because it might be a chillul hashem if they take it the wrong way.

The only time I find hearing "Merry Christmas" annoying is when the person saying it KNOWS I am Jewish! I also find it thoughtless when I receive a Christmas card from someone I know instead of a Hanukkah card. But I guess depending on how religious one is, it may or may not be a big deal to them. I say, when in doubt, "Happy Holidays" is always your safest, less-likely-to-offend holiday greeting.

That's because you believe you're supposed to be annoyed... here's something that should straighten you right out. Get Barbra Steisand's 1967 Christmas album. On it, SHE says "Merry Christmas" at least 20x... it should help you cope.
Christmas is actually non-secular now, far MORE than in 1967, by the way. Snowmen weren't really used in windows, back then. And there were FAR more nativity scenes and sets, and you can't find many on sale nowadays... beyond menora's, Santa's, wreaths and trees.. all unrelating to what religious christians/ catholics decry is taking "christ" from Chirstmas (or... 'Xmas'?!?).
P.S. -- Also, you'll be ok, if you say "merry christmas"... I live in New York and have not seen one person burning anywhere, as a result of saying this, and being Jewish.

Ok from my point of view...(I say Merry Christmas)......I do not know for sure what religion you are just by looking at you. When someone says to me" Happy Hannakah" I respect that. That is that person's religious preference.
And you should feel the same..... just say" Happy Hannakuh" and go on your way. As long as this world exists we are going to have different religions, and this is what gets under my skin.... when people don't respect other people even though they are different!!! For instance......Christmas is for those that believe in Christ.....and one of our traditions for this season is "christmas tree", but because of the fact that other religions were offended.... because it's a "Christmas tree" it is now being changed to "holiday trees, so that those religions can participate in a tradition"celebrating the birth of Christ" that they don't believe in. So I think we should change some things as well...... instead of a "menorrah" it should be called a "holiday candle"............be glad that people are being nice... quit taking offense to it, enjoy the season and get over it.....

I am a believer in Christ... and I find it annoying...
Christmas is a pagan celebration introduced by the Romans in around 300 A.D. celebrating the birth of their sun God - mithras who was supposedly born on Dec. 25th.
The tree... the yule log... the mistletoe... even the date (Dec 25th)... all stem from pagan worship of other gods.
I grew up celebrating christmas but now that I know the truth of it's origins and the meaning of its traditions... It is an abomination to me.
Neither christian nor jew should celebrate christmas if they want to live a life that is pleasing to God.
I like the idea of Hanukkah.
Perhaps christians should have their own maccabeean revolt...

Respectfully, it bothers me that people do not want me to say merry christimas. I would never say it if I thought it would offend someone, or if I thought they did not celebrate Christimas. When someone says merry Christimas to you or other people that do not celebrate Christimas, it is not ment to offend. It is ment as a blessing to whoever it is spoken to. I have only ment it as a blessing, in hopes that they have a happy holidays. And I often say Happy Holidays if I know the person I am talking to does not celebrate Christmas. Does this make sense?
Every year my church and the Jewish Temple next door have a holiday party, and worship service together. It is held at my church and and myself along with the other members of my church wear a yarmulke. We do this to show respect for Judism.
If someone said "happy Hanukkah" to me I would take it as a compliment, and return the blessing. I would not take offence to this at all.

Well, being Jewish, i know It gets annoying, but I just say "Shabbat Shalom" if it's Shabbat. But what REALLY gets annoying is when you're at a store and the casheir, trying to make conversation says, "What is Santa going to bring you this year?" I don't know why, it just gets on my nerves. I just say, "For HANUKKAH I got a new skateboard" and leave it at that.
So you're not alone.

naw, not anymore. it used to bug me when I was younger, but then i realized that though I'm a chosen person I live in a gentile world. No one means any offense to it, unless of course they know that you're jewish and they wish to exclude you. However, I believe that that isn't the case. To most people "Merry Christmas" is synonymous with "happy holidays." That's what I usually say back, it's safe.
so happy belated hanukkah and happy holidays!
p.s. I was content with my answer, knowing that most people are just trying to wish you a cheery season, then i was looking back at the answers and saw bakerone's. hey bakerone, I hope you choke on coal, you stupid ignorant shmuck. Oh and happy holidays-shmuck!

Most people now say have a good holiday to be politically correct. I'm not annoyed. We live in a predominately Christian world. The same things happens in the Spring when people wish you a Happy Easter.
People don't mean anything negative about it. In fact, they are trying to be nice.
Christmas has lost much of it's religious meaning anyway.
