Well if God is not gender-specific, why do we call him "He" instead of "it"?

"Nads" are not a part of the equation. The Hebrew word for "image" - easier to see the meaning in the Greek "ikon" - or - as we in English would say "icon" - is a "spiritual imprint". Not physical.

God is Spirit and is both "male and female", but not in a human way.(He does does not need a mate to reproduce).
Originally, God formed Adam with male and female atttibutes(human beings still retain those qualities today). When it came time to give Adam a help-mate, God put Adam to sleep and took the part that Adam didn't need and created a "womb-man"...a woman for him.
All humans are created in God's "image" meaning we are spirit in a flesh body. We all have a feminine spirit (yes, men too) and when the life of Christ is infused into our spirit, a new creature is formed in us and eventually grows up to be just like our Father.
All this is explained in detail in a book, SonPlacing, by Garrison Russell. Available at: http://www.amazon.com

God did not refer to our physical form, but the characteristics of masculinity and femininity. Meaning women usually nurture the children and men protect and provide for the family. God refers to him/herself as nurturer and protector and so on. Our genitals makes us either male or female ans also makes as sexual beings. God is not a sexual being and therefore does not need a penis or vagina. God was not talking about that when they said let us create man and woman in our image.

The man's because that's what he created 1st.
He created the woman second because no animal was a suitable partner for Adam.
This is not sexist!

Both - God is both male and female in one. Our spirit is what is made in God's image, not the physical body. Spirit is genderless.
