will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works
6:2 And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer.
6:8 And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.

Revelation is most mystical book of the Bible (along with its prophecy in Daniel). It's very difficult to understand--I don't and I don't take it lightly. It is impossible to just read and interpret it as it is--it takes years of study. It refers to things other than the final days (whatever that may be), including the Jewish Diaspora, so it's written on many levels.
I don't think about Jesus coming; we should live every day as though He is coming any minute! All this nonsense about the exact day and time is just conjecture.

If you are a Christian, you will have peace. The book of Revelation describes the seven ages and conditions of the history of the Church, including the apostasy of mainstream religion today ( the church of Laodicea, Revelation 3:14-22). It foretells the seven worst years of the history of the world, which is split in two parts: the Tribulation and the Great Tribulation. The rise of the world dictator, the Anti-Christ and his evil accomplice, the False Prophet is central to this seven year period.
The peaceful part for Christians will be the fact that we will be present with the Lord during the day of the Lord's vengeance ( notice there is no mention of the Church on earth in Revelation chapters 4 to 19) . Also, millions will receive Christ during the tribulation despite the horrific events. To learn more, I recommend studying the books of Daniel, Revelation, all 4 of the major prophets, all 12 of the minor prophets, and a good commentary like, Jack Van Impe;s, "Revelation Revealed."

While I wouldn't call it "peaceful," I think putting it in context is extremely important to understanding why it is the way it is.
During the first century, Christians were persecuted. 2 of the most horrific torturering emperors were Nero and Domition. Revelation is written around 95 AD, around the reign of Domition.
When groups are being persecuted, they tend to write stuff like this. It's a particular writing style popular at the time called Apocalyptic writing. (Where we get the term "The Apocalypse.")
You're right, it's violent, but within the context of justice and the hope and understanding of peace ultimately prevailing. (Keep reading)
Hope this helps some.

It speaks of great tribulation, followed by great victory (and peace) for all of God's children - similar to a woman suffering the pains of pregnancy, then giving birth to a beautiful baby!

a Revelation TO JOHN---this thrilling book of the Bible brings the divine record to a happy climax. Why do we say "happy"? Well, the Author of the bible is described as "the happy God", who entrust "glorious good news" to to who love him. He wants us to be happy too. Thus, at the outset Revelation assures us: "HAPPY IS HE WHO READS...THE WORDS OF THIS PROPHECY." in its final chapter we are told "HAPPY IS ANYONE OBSERVING THE WORDS OF THE PROPHECY OF THIS SCROLL." How do we find happiness through the book of Revelation? We do so by searching out the meaning of its vivid signs, or symbols, and acting in harmony therewith.
The best book to read and get a better understanding of this Bible book is REVELATION ITS GRAND CLIMAX AT HAND!

Is it getting to you??? Try not looking at it like a typical atheist looking for fault in biblical text...and don't deny that you are doing exactly that...
It's the prophecy of the end of mankind's existence as we now see it...if it scares you...hope the atheists are right in their repetitive assumptions...
