and what if i remove windows installer 3.1 in the ADD or REMOVE PROGRAMS??..

Why do you want to roll back your installer? Like most applications it is backward compatible.

If it is corrupted there are various fixes available on the Windows Support page - they vary with Windows editions.

You can uninstall your current version and replace it with the one currently avaiable as a download from Microsoft.

I suspect merely replacing/backrolling your installer may not solve your problem.

Since the Installer is needed to be able to install the older version of Installer, you would not be able to install the older Installer without the Installer.

(Ouch! I think I hurt my brain on that one!!)

Seriously, there is a register entry you have to modifiy to allow Windows to use an older install program. Unfortunately, the entry varies with each version of Windows. Since you did not list the version....
