Scooting is the classic sign that the anal glands need to be expressed (drained). Take you dog to the vet or to a groomer to have this done. If you do not they can become abscessed.

Some dogs will require this to be done at regular intervals and some may never need it again. Heavy (overweight) dogs tend to have this problem a little more. Also a dog that has soft stools may have this problem more frequently. The anal glands normally express on their own when a dog has a bowl movement.

The old wives tale is that if a dog is scooting it must have worms.

Most dogs have "anal glands" adjacent to the actual anus. These glands tend to slowly fill with a foul-smelling accumulation and need to be periodically "expressed." If not, these glands can become distended and cause discomfort for the animal. Scooting behavior is a common symptom when this happens.

Expressing the anal glands can be done by yourself or it can be done by a vet or by most groomers.

Sometimes dogs do that when they need anal glands to be expressed.

Make an appointment with your vet or a reputable groomer to see about having this done.

Try some analgesic spray on her little behind. When my kitten got diarrhea her behind was sore, and this spray numbed it so she didn't hurt. You can buy it at any pet supply store, and they also sell it at Walgreens.
