The question becomes "what is your marital status as of December 31" assuming you use the calander year for your taxes (which most people do). Since you divorced in March, you need to file as single, or possibly head of household. If you have dependents you may want to look into the head of household status as it is usually more favorable than single filing status.
Hope this helps!!

No. And the judge can't tell you to either.
The IRS (and the states too!) only look at your marital status at midnight on 12/31. If you get married at any time during the year, you are married; if you get divorced (and stay divorced) by the end of the year you are single.
There is no 6 month rule.

If the divorce was finalized in 2007, you are single. You can no longer file as "Married".

No. It's your marriage state at midnight on December 31 that determines your filing status.

Adding to what others have stated. If you have a child living with you, you can probably file as head of household and do better then being single.

To file as married, at least in my state, you have to have been married for at least 6 months out of the year.
