I'm trying to figure out the best way to learn a foreign language. I think I might have a little bit of a talent for following different languages...but in order to become fluent I'm not sure what the best way is to learn. Right now I'm working on Dutch because one of my friends is fluent. I would like it if I could start learning on my own and be able to give him the whole "WOW factor" by learning on my own. Any suggestions?

Spanish would definately be more useful...but I've been trying my entire life to roll my R's. I think my tongue is shaped funny or something...Lol. The reason I'm learning Dutch is because it is so close to German, and has the same basis as French and Spanish. It will make it easier to learn the other languages, and I don't think I will have very many opportunities to learn it later on in my life. Also...my friend appreciates it a lot and I like making him smile. ^.^

Dutch is great, but you would be putting a lot of effort into learning a language spoken by only a few million people, whereas, if you chose Spanish, you'd be able to communicate with over 350 million people worldwide. Likewise, Mandarin Chinese, Hindi and Arabic would give you access to many more people.

Well, that would be impressive...knowing a bunch of languages. I think the best way is to immerse yourself in the culture. If there is any way you can travel to any of those countries and stay there for a while, and study the language there, it would speed up the whole process for you.
