OK...I have had a Frenchie...VERY gassy. Now I have an American Bulldog. The dog farts ALL the time. You can hear it. I can say I have never heard one of my Newfs fart. This dog is pretty darn gassy. She eats a high quality food and no table scraps. Is this something particular to Bully breeds, or what? Any suggestions?? Of course this is the dog that sleeps WITH us.

And it is not only the smell, but the SOUND!!!!! Geez...we had people over for a little pre-Christmas gathering, and the dog..especially when sitting on the lineolum..makes LOUD noises. People tried to pretend they didn't hear it, but of course they did!!! Of course, then they smelled it.

She is eating Innova. We tried the Evo because I had that already, but she did NOT do well on that and we could not live with the windows open in the dead of winter.
When we got her, she had been eating Pedigree, and she had bad gas then...so I was thinking the food. But, it does not seem much better on the Innova.

I agree that it has to do with the amount of air they are taking in, especially when they eat fast. Our Doberman eats seriously fast...attacking his food bowl. (The owners of the kennel he once stayed at said they'd never seen another dog eat as fast as him.) Our Doberman also has serious gas sometimes and it's horrible. I mean, it wakes us up at night from the smell.

I've also found that sometimes our Dobie will get into things without our realizing it. He has a sensitive tummy too, so that doesn't help anything. If he even eats some of my other dog's food it's all you can do to stay in the same building as him.

Keep some air fresheners on hand, light some candles. Remind yourself often that they are dogs and really don't have manners. When all else fails, laugh at them as they stare at their butts and run from the noise. Wish that you could be as free as them, that nothing embarrasses you!

My two Labs can clear a room in nothing flat!

I get stuff from a company called Doctors Foster and Smith. The web address is: www.drsfostersmith.com. If you do a search under "Dog Supplies" it will give you several categories. Click on the "Digestive Aids" category. There are three different options depending on what your dog likes.

1. Acidophilus+ - it comes in a liquid form so you can put it on your dog's food

2. Canine Gas Ease - it is a paste/gel that you have to feed the dog. This product has simethicone in it. This product seemed like too much trouble since it works best if given after your dog eats. As I leave food out for mine all the time, it wasn't practical for me so I don't know how well it works.

3. Excel Gas Preventative - it comes in tablet form. My guys think it is a treat so we make it part of our daily routine. I have had good success with this product.

You can probably find all of these at local pet stores, this site is just convenient for me because I don't have a pet store that is very close.

Good luck.

Its a bully thing. Due to them sucking in more air when the eat or even drink they naturally produce more gas. Mostly this is due to the reduction of their nasal cavities. Basically the same reason they snore and snort and grunt and burp.

You might try putting a ball or something in their food dish so that he has to slow down and eat around the ball and won't suck in as much air inturn less gas.As for the smell no way to help it.

I have an English Staffordshire Bull Terrier that can clear a room and can really cut some logs.

Had the same exact problem, Here's a couple of suggestions.
1. Try feeding more often(just less food) this will help with the gulping of food
2. you could buy some granulated charcoal and add it to his food.
3. The one that completley eliminated it with my bulldog was the raw food diet. The gas was ridicolous. i would come home, when I opened up the door, Bam! Like a punch in the face!!! The difference from when I started raw is amazing.

I'm sorry but I think its funny! I rather hear it then smell it. Since I changed my dogs to a higher quality food also they fart more often. There farts do smell healthier though..... I usually make them go out and do their business when they start stinking up the living room and they go, and the room becomes less cloudy afterwards!

I am having the same problem.

I can barely be around my cocker mix at night after he eats. It's like something died, the smell is so bad. I've actually looked around to see if they brought something dead in the house before realizing it was him.

I am feeding solid gold currently, but I am going to try mixing in some canidae and maybe switch over if it seems to help.

Try changing the dog's food. Often times that does help to eleviate some of the issue, however, Bull dogs are not known for smelling pretty...so your kinda stuck with it.
Sorry!

My bullmastiff has the worst noseburning farts EVER!!! & you never hear them, so he will be laying with you & all of the sudden there is a noxious cloud of gas around you! I've heard bean-o helps, but have yet to try it. I think this is just somehting dog lovers deal with!

Pretty much any dog even slightly related to a bull dog farts up a storm. My Boxer farts twice as much as my Dobies. And it smells AWFUL! Whew!!!
