Whenever someone opens the front door, he would just dart out and make us chase after him, he would pause and wait until we catch up and run again. We're very tired of chasing after him sometimes 3 times a day. Is there anything we can do to train him not to?

Your chasing him is rewarding his bad bahvior with a fun game. That has to stop.

I agree with those that say training is the key. A reliable sit/stay will work for this problem. But until you get that done, you still have a dangerous situation for your dog.

I recommend using what I call The Leash of Good Behavior.
Put a light 6 foot leash on your dog and make him drag it around the house 24 hours a day. When you open the door and he makes a break for it, you have a handle you can grab, or if necessary, stomp on the leash as he goes past. Being brough up short will take the wind out of his sails and this won't be a fun game anymore.

Meanwhile, seriously, you gotta work on the sit/stay.

NEVER chase the dog. It makes it worse. You need to retrain. ON LEAD. PRactice going through doogs MAKING the dog wait until you have gone through FIRST and say "OK". Then you should get to training class and learn a good recall.

i agree with robin. make him wear a leash in the house. my big dog wears one. not because she bolts outside, but because she is still learning that kitties do not want to play with her. the leash is much easier to grab when she starts chasing them than she is.

if you know someone is going to open the door, grab the leash and tell him to sit and stay and then reward him when he does.

needs basic obedience training first. then, teach him to always "wait" (for everything). never chase a dog - as you see it is a game to him and oh, what fun it is to be chased! next, teach a really reliable recall (coming when called is essential to be 100% reliable for his safety). you can learn all of this in obedience classes. i would suggest you enroll today.

Well most time dogs do this to play and have fun. If it bothers you take the time to teach him to sit and stay... If he cant learn theres always that remote that sends a high frequency noise to the dog that i guess scares him and he probly wont run outside anymore... hope this helped

I would train him to SIT when the door is opened.
Don't ever let him out unless he sits first. Eventually he will get the idea that it's not ok to dash out the door.

STOP CHASING him. You are playing his game.

Train him to the "come" command, with a treat!!
