Yes they do matter - you may have to sit them all over again if they are the key to what you want to do later.
Of course you will get a job - you may have several different jobs during your working life; my husband is a metallurgy graduate and finished his working career as an electronics engineer. One friend has a law degree and became a social worker.
If you can wave a piece of paper, with good exam results on it, in front of a prospective employer you can prove to him or her that you are able to apply yourself to a particular task and make a success of it. So, if it is a choice between someone who has their GCSE's and someone who has failed them, the person who has proved their worth is more likely to be given the job.

if you fail any GCSE you must be very dense. You should try sitting an original 'O' level paper like i did in the 80's. Now they were hard. It's amazing how the governments over the years have made exams easier, it's just made students thicker. Most life examples are common sense and most kids today and a lot of adults just don't learn life skills.

They do matter- but the extent to which largely depends on what you want to do. Maths and English are the key ones which most employers look for. Other than that it depends on what field you want to work in. They are essential if you want to go on to further education (A-levels, NVQs and even going to University!) but many employers value experience as well.
I got my current job based on my customer service experience BUT GCSE Maths & English grade C or above was also required.
Its worth the effort- you could get some jobs without any qualifications at all- but thats unlikely to be your ideal job!
Good luck!

I didn't do very well in my exams at school or college, but started work and did all sorts (temp work) to find out what I enjoyed and get some experience. I took some vocational qualifications and with alot of drive, passion and hard work, eventually worked my way up to become a Finance Director.
You can get anywhere in life if you remain foccussed on what you want !
Qualifications aren't always the answer, but they make the doors open alot easier !

It does matter. You will get a job, but it'll be harder and depends what you want.
If you fail, do re-takes. Definitely. Don't wait as time moves on before you know it.
