I am in great health. I don't have thyroid issues. I run 30 miles a week, lift weights to stay toned, and have no health issues that I am aware of. I'm not skinny, but my body fat is only about 5%, my BMI is 21.3. Perhaps that has something to do with it. I just don't know. My hands get cold easily. I feel great and this is not really a problem, but I am curious why this may be so. Any ideas?

Merry Christmas!

There is nothing wrong with you 98.6 degrees is an average not the norm. Ask your doctor to check it and see what he says. The best method of body temperature gauging is the Ear or Rectal method. If you get the same readings using one of these methods you know that you have a lower than normal body temperature.

And the last possibility is over-training. When you overtrain your body's ability to rest or relax is compromised and there are many side effects including elevated heart rate and lower body temperature. If your temperature has not always been this low and if you've been training very hard for a long time, it might be time for a rest.

I included some links for you to read and study up on.

Good Luck.

How do you know you don't have a thyrid problem? Thyroid testing is very fickle. It can depend on the time of day you tested. Thyroid testing always needs o be done first thing in the morning ONLY. Also, TSH range is vague and some labs are going by outdated ranges. Basically if morning TSH is over 2.0, you are hypothyroid.

Another cause for your coldness could be low amounts of body fat.

98.6 is the nominal normal body temperature, but just like other things, this can be different for different individuals. my normal body temperature is 97.2, and it has been for 20 years. i rarely register above 98.0. it sounds like you are in very good physical condition, and in good health besides. it might be worth a question to your physician at your next physical, but if it has been this way for a long time, i would say it's "normal for you". my doctor's office has many years of history of me registering within a point or 2 of 97.2, so it's pretty well established that it's "normal for me."

hope this helps.

It probably is your BMI. But some people are naturally 'cooler' than others. I have a friend that can't even be detected by thermal detectors because of this.

Since your percent body fat is so low your body may be thinking it had better not burn too much energy keeping you warm or you might starve! Raising your body fat might actually increase your metabolism and elevate your body temperature. Or this might just be normal for you. I suggest a sweater. ;-)
