I am Buddhist and as part of my practise at home I light incense sticks. At the moment I am using some ones I got free from a Buddhist website I ordered two malas from. However, when I light them all I can smell is smoke. The same goes for any other incense sticks I use. I have tried using only matches, blowing them out after lighting them, etc but I can only smell smoke, non of the Jasmine, Patchouli, etc. Would incense cones be better! Please help!

Cones or using essential oils in a diffuser may be better for you.

I agree that the incense may just be old.

http://www.enchantedworks.com sells some incense that is fairly woodsmoke free. IIRC, it's from Japan.

All incense sticks should only have a flame until the very edge of the tip glows, then the flame gets blown out. The more red coal at the end, the more woodsmoke.

The smoke that you smell is from the Stick burning

Morning Star brand is pure incense, no stick.

PS-The correct way to burn the incense is to light the tip, and then blow out the flame so that the tip of the incense is glowing like an amber.

The best is made of Masala (spices).
The one I like the most and can be found with no chemical is Vrindavana Flower - Hare Krishna people have them.

I use nag champa and never smell smoke...just yumminess. Maybe you are buying really cheap ones with little essence to them? Just a guess.

Try the powder...much less burning smell, more of the actual scent.

Could be just old. I would go to stores owned by the 'new americans' where you can actually smell them before you buy.
