ok so i've come to an understanding that memebers of the lds read an extended version of the bible, it's the same book, but feel that the "other" bible was incomplete.

so do you belive that you have to follow ALL of the bibical texts to go to heaven, or is do you believe that it's all about the relationship with God?

and what do you believe about people who never have a chance to hear about god? do you believe that they are going to hell? one of my friends who is baptist told me that everyone has a chance to learn abotu jesus before they die and if you don't believe, you'll go to hell...
but i don't believe that eveyone has that chance, like people in tribes in south america, the people in africa...

and what about mentally disabled people? do they automatically get into heaven?

Never, EVER apologize for having lots of questions. Questions are a beautiful thing that help you learn more about everything in our world. Besides, us LDS folk love sincere questions about our faith! =D

So, I'm going to take these questions one by one.

Well, we use the KJV of the Holy Bible. In addition we have The Book of Mormon, The Doctrine & Covenants (D&C), and The Pearl of Great Price. Most LDS carry this in a combined publication called a quad, which simply means it has all four books. Just makes it easier to haul around. The Book of Mormon, D&C, and Pearl of Great Price are books that complement the Holy Bible and expound on some of the teachings therein.

We believe we must strive to be as close to our Saviour, Jesus Christ, as we can and try to follow his commandments every day of our lives. That means we need to know his commandments, which means lots of scripture study. But, our Father in Heaven knows that we are fallible creatures prone to sin, that is what repentance is for. So when we mess up, we can repent and try again. As long as we are doing all that we can and truly trying our hardest, that is all the Lord asks of us.

We believe that those that have never had the chance to learn the true gospel of Jesus Christ will be given the chance to learn and accept the truth in the Spirit world before Judgement Day. That is why we do so much work for the dead, IE baptisms for the dead. We believe that by doing this work, it enables the spirits that have already left their bodies to make the choice to accept the baptism or not after they have been taught the gospel.

I think your friend might be a little confused. Technically, LDS do not believe in a literal Hell. We believe Hell to be more a state of mind, going over the mistakes you made and how easy it would have been to make the right choice.

Mentally disabled people are a complicated issue. It has a lot of factors. Any mentally disabled person that has less cognitive ability than an eight year old child is guaranteed a spot in the Celestial Kingdom. When they have cognitive abilities above an eight-year-old, it is a case by case basis. But we believe we have a perfect Father in Heaven that will judge them perfectly. He knows what is in their hearts and what they could/could not understand. He will judge where the best place for them in the afterlife is.

Hope that clears up some of your questions.

For further information, I would suggest you go to
http://www.mormon.org
The church has built this website specifically for non-members to learn about what we believe and why. If you still have questions after that, I would suggest contacting the local missionaries in your area.

In addition to what the first person who responded I will add a bit about the Book of Mormon.
The Book of Mormon is a record of God's dealings with the people of this continent anciently. It is a completely separate from the Bible. We have no desire for anyone to stop believing in the Bible. It is an inspired text that has endured through the ages, through many corrupt or careless hands and yet still has wisdom that is priceless contained within it.

You're absolutely right that not everyone has a chance to learn about Christ before they die.

Contrary to what you may have heard, earth life isn't a pass or fail class. We're given this opportunity on earth to gain experiences that will help us grow and develop. Everyone is different and will have different experiences.

Everyone will have opportunities to learn about the Gospel, whether it's before or after death.

There are some great videos at www.mormon.org that will help you understand our beliefs better.

I believe we are all judged according to our own understanding. Some people never get to read the bible or any other religous books, but does that mean that are just out of luck? No, God is fair and loving. We shouldnt spend our time trying to decide where people who believe different things will go or how they will be judged, that is not our decision. We are Gods children and he loves us and wants us to return home to live with Him. Try to be a good person and live your life to become more like Him.

Well, it's not really the same book. Mormons still read the bible and believe it, but they also have a "Book of Mormon" which was supposedly given to the "Prophet" "Joseph Smith" on golden plates which he translated. The "Book of Mormon" can also be changed by the president of the mormon church whenever he feels it necessary.

As for what you have to do to go to heaven, if you believe in such a place:

Going to church every sunday and reading the bible and doing all of the things a "good christian" does does not get you into heaven. More than likely, doing so will really just keep you from actually knowing your God. I would suggest you do some reading on Søren Kierkegaard, to understand what I mean. There are very few "true" Christians out there.

I don't claim to be one, but I can understand other points of view.

our church uses the king james version bible in all of our lessons, in all of our talks and when we teach. we have passages that joseph smith corrected that are far an in between but i rarely see members use that version. That version has both text, what the verses say before the translation and the new translation.

biblical texts bring us closer to god and develop a deeper understanding of god and our relationship with him.

I suggest going to www.mormon.org or www.lds.org to read about our beliefs and the church

I love a sincere question. The Book of Mormon contains the Gospel written by prophets on the American continent. The Bible is what the Prophet Ezekiel calls the stick of Judah and the Book of Mormon is the stick of Joseph.

Ezekiel 37:15 The word of the LORD came again unto me, saying,
16 Moreover, thou son of man, take thee one stick, and write upon it, For Judah, and for the children of Israel his companions: then take another stick, and write upon it, For Joseph, the stick of Ephraim, and for all the house of Israel his companions:
17 And join them one to another into one stick; and they shall become one in thine hand.

The justice and mercy of Heavenly Father would not permit his children to be lost through no fault of their own. Each of us has the light of Christ. All will have the opportunity to hear and accept the Gospel.

7 Thus came the voice of the Lord unto me, saying: All who have died without a knowledge of this gospel, who would have received it if they had been permitted to tarry, shall be heirs of the celestial kingdom of God;
8 Also all that shall die henceforth without a knowledge of it, who would have received it with all their hearts, shall be heirs of that kingdom;
9 For I, the Lord, will judge all men according to their works, according to the desire of their hearts.
10 And I also beheld that all children who die before they arrive at the years of accountability are saved in the celestial kingdom of heaven.
