No, Pompeii was destroyed By a Volcanic Eruption in 79 A.D. In Italy Mt. Vesuvius
Sodom and Gamorrah was on the S.E corner of the Dead sea and was destroyed over a Thousand years prior to that.
The historical existence of Sodom and Gomorrah is still in dispute by archaeologists. The Bible indicates they were located near the Dead Sea (Genesis 14:1-3, Genesis 14:8-10, Deuteronomy 34:3).
Strabo states that locals living near Moasada (probably Masada) say that "there were once thirteen inhabited cities in that region of which Sodom was the metropolis".[2].

That is horribly off. Pompeii and Sodom or Gomorrah are from different times and places. Sodom and Gomorrah were some of the cities of the plain next to the Jordon river (but the Bible puts them near the Dead Sea) while Pompeii was on the coast of Italy. Pompeii was destroyed by a volcanic eruption and the ash covered and preserved the city. I have been there and it is an amazing place to visit. The only similarity between the two stories is that fire and brimstone might be similar to a volcanic eruption (or vice versa).
On an interesting note, only Christianity focuses on homosexuality as the reason for their destruction (well, Sodom's, Gomorrah's destruction is never fully explained as to why) while other religions and historians actually indicate it was their treatment of others that was so evil. For example, they would give money to beggars but carve their name into them and citizens would refuse to sell them food so they would starve to death, and those who gave them money would go get it back.

I've always thought that God took out Pompeii for the destruction of Jerusalem and Pompeii was like a Roman resort.
If she is considering the evil of both and both receiving destruction, she's probably onto something. As the others mentioned the geography is way off.

No.....wrong place...Pompeii and Vesuvius are in Italy.
Sodom and Gomorrah were in the Middle East near Israel. Dead Sea full of salt is thought to be location of both.
Vesuvius erupted destroying Pompeii in 79 AD and Sodom/Gomorrah were hundreds of years back in the BC when Abraham and his nephew Lot were alive.

I don't see how that is possible; Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed hundreds of years before Pompeii.

No, Pompeii is in a different country (Italy) where the other two cities were supposedly (near the Dead Sea). But there was another town nearby Pompeii that was also destroyed at the same time along with Pompeii. It was called Herculaneum. So there are similarities.

Mount Vesuvius made it's famous eruption in 79 A.D. Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed way back in Abraham and Lot's time(around 2,000 B.C.). There's a huge time gap. Also, Pompeii was located in Italy... I don't think Lot went to Italy in 79 A.D. So, I don't think your co-worker's theory is correct...

August 24, 79 C.E is the date Pompeii was destroyed.
Sodom was destroyed by God and not a natural disaster like Pompeii.......also it happened thousands of years before the destruction of Pompeii.

Pompeii, from what we can tell so far, has been buried by volcanic eruptions about 7 times... and, considering the part of the globe that is considered most like where that part of the "Old Testament" was written, I'd concur with the first poster.

No, she is incorrect.
Sodom and Gemorrah were located in what is now the border of Israel and Saudi Arabia. There has been some excavatory work, but obviously not much is left. They have found tons of ash and combustible residue, but that is again just a best case scenario since we do not know exactly where the cities were.
