i have an old gate way and am trying to boot from a ubuntu live cd, i set it so that it should boot from theATAPI CDROM in the bios, but it says the boot failed. i dont think that its a problem with the boot cd. is there a nother way? its a gateway gs-350

Hmmm...it does sound like a problem with the boot CD. If the CD is good, you should be able to use it to boot in any computer, not just the old GW.

Check all of the connections for the CD-ROM drive to ensure they're all seated firmly. It might even be that the system is so old, it's not compatible with the new OS. Have you checked the Ubuntu webpage for minimum system requirements?

hit F2 on the start up screen and choose boot in the menu and put boot from CD-ROM

to exclude the possibility of a bad cd, can you first try to boot another machine with this cd. ?
