From my experience, those who are very prideful seem to actually hate themselves, and the pride is a defense. What do you think?

self love = self respect

conceit = vanity = pride

I define "pride" as valuing an achievement in itself. And in this sense, there is certainly no use for pride. The real value is always in the doing, and never in sitting back and exulting in something already done. Love of self is another matter - but again, to value the "self" for itself is a dangerous exacerbation of the Ego.

Pride is not the same as love of self.
Pride is boastful, which indicates some need to justify ones self. It indicates to me "I don't think you like me that much, but boy, if you only knew how great I am at (insert self compliment here), then you'd think I am an awesome person and you'd be so happy to be in my company."

Love of self, in my book, is feeling good about who you are, taking care of yourself, loving those around you, but also having the ability to keep ones accomplishments to ones self.

Being proud of ones self is not the same thing as narcasism. Some one who always just puts them first is self centered and only has their own interests in mind. Someone who has pride in the things they do care about others achievements as well. With narcasists the conversation is always about them even when you try to tell them about yourself.

Agree. Ones who truely love themselves have humility and spread that same love to others. Love is like a overflowing fountain. It overflowes to others. Pride works the other way. It sucks the life out of themselves and others.

Pride is thinking of yourself as higher than anyone else.
Love of self is seeing yourself as a worthy person.
So I don't really think they are the same thing.

Read Proverbs. Soloman had a lot to say about pride

Love of oneself is not pride. One must first discover who they are and fall in love with oneself before they can discover and love God. Self realization precedes God realization.
