I've been in a long bout of overall depression for quite some time now. But for some reason, when I go a long time without sleep, I am cheerful, outgoing, and life is FUN. I am much more talkative and confident after a night of no sleep. It's comparable to being high.
This is not a joke. Have you ever heard of this?

Not getting sleep for a night can screw with your brain and make it change it's normal patterns which affects your behaviors. This used to happen to me; sometimes, I would avoid sleep just to feel good the next day. I think it's ok as long as you are young, don't go more than 24 hours without sleep, only do it once or twice a month, and don't fall behind in anything that needs to be done. And don't stop sleeping multiple times a week just to get this feeling because eventually it will catch up to you. But every-so-often, it can serve as a great refreshment. Probably not recommended, but hey, if it's not that often and you keep it under control, I say it's fine.

You DEFINITELY go under bipolar.
Welcome to the crowd. Go to a psychiatrist for a diagnosis.
I have gone 4 days with zero sleep in a hypomania, and I naturally slept only 3-5 hours a night since I was a freshman in high school. It did not particularly effect my depression, and it was amazing rejuvenating in a mania. Then my depression became the worst it had ever been after a hypomania earlier this year, and once again I couldn't sleep AT ALL.... so I have consistently been on sleep meds, which have helped level my moods as well as multiple other medications.
You are describing very similarly a hypomania, that could escalade to a mania. I would see a doctor right away, for safety's sake.... or go along for the ride and experience the wonderous side of bipolar disorder!!! haha no dont do that. bad suggestion. stupid me. just being honest. :)

lack of sleep, food deprivation, and many other external factors can enhance 'right brained experiences' That is why native Americans would go on long fasts in the desert to gain a vision.
I know the feeling you get, I used to experience the same thing in my youth. I think that your left brain has gone to sleep, taking with it your inhabitions and fears.
In reality, you really ARE a fun, cheerful, outgoing and fun person. You just need to practice on allowing yourself to be that way all the time. Stop listening to any negative info your 'talking' brain tries to tell you.

Sweety, after a long period of depression you start to see all things under a different light, and also the most insignificant things happen to appear great to your eyes and your feeling, so I guess you have achieved a sort of "non sleeping state of mind" just to be always on top of everything, just because you feel thirsty of news, of fun, of things to see, to do and explore. Another good reason to be up all nite would be to have the right girl in bed with you....!!!!

I am the same way! the times when i get lots of sleep i feel sluggish at work and tired, yawning all day. the times when i get like 3-4 hrs i am up and energetic, and feel happy. its the weirdest thing....!

Mood swings usually relate to Bi-Polar illness. They have meds to help you out. See a Doctor.
