It's in Revelation - it is a reference only to people who are bitten by a supernatural locust-type demon that will inhabit the earth after the Rapture and before the second coming of Christ. It is one of the judgements poured out upon unbelievers. The locusts will sting people, who will suffer in great pain for five months. They will be in so much pain that they will wish they could die, and even try to commit suicide, but they won't be able to die.
And yes, I'd rather die and go to some spiritual place, which is possible. It is not a trick, you have simply read or quoted or remembered the verse out of its context - context is everything.

Mormons distinguish between immortality and eternal life. Eternal is one of God's names so Eternal life is life with God like His. But immortality - a separate concept - does seem an empty trap. This is the almost unconscious theme of all vampire literature. Vampires live forever but are miserable. Merely dodging death doesn't seem to hold much promise.

You may be referring to Revelation Chapter 9. Here are 3 of the verses...
4 And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads.
5 Â And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man.
6 Â And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them.
As I understand the prophesy, this plague, like the others was meant by God to persuade mankind that there really is a God in Heaven and to allow them every opportunity to repent and proclaim Him Lord.

Eternal life that is sought by so many humans, is a terrible proposition.
Most people just don't think it through, and just accept that it is going to be a great time.
In reality, Eternal life would render life useless and purposeless.
Achievement would cease to exist, success would not exist, life would not have meaning. There are only so many times you can sing Amazing Grace before you start to wish you were dead.
Believers don't take the time to really think about it. In the end eternal life in heaven and eternal life in hell would both be prisons of meaningless existence.
