I am on a super budget because of Christmas, but I really want to get my Mom something great. She is really depressed about turning 50, and I need something super. Any ideas would be helpful.

wine - tell her, like wine, things get better with age

shiny jewelry - tell her she is radiant

nice bed linens or bath linens - everyone should relax and be pampered

dinner at a restaurant - who wants to cook on their birthday?

frame a bunch of photos of her (and her family or friends) over the years, and tell her how lucky she is to have gained so many memories and life experiences. give her a few empty frames for future memories.

something related to her favorite hobbies: does she cook or paint or scrapbook or go to a yoga class or a book club? Buy her supplies or a related gift certificate to one of those activities. Tell her to celebrate the things that she enjoys and embrace who she is!

fresh flowers or a basket of good food if she already has "everything she needs"

Talk to her relatives and friends, also. Sometimes they know things about your Mom that you don't know. Surprise her with your thoughtfulness.

Make her a scrapbook detailing her first 50 years. Show her that she has experienced a lot in her life, and that she still has a lot to experience. When my father turned 50 I could tell he was a little depressed, he kept mentioning "Half a Century"...and when you say it like that it really does sound older. So I thought back and there were many things and stories that he had told my sisters and I over the years and certain stories I had hear over and over. Those were the stories that meant the most to him. The ones that made him happy. So I scrapped those. The book was't perfect...it could have had more embellishments and finer papers, but he loved it because it was the memories and the thought of him and what he thought was important was in it. I had some pages in the book that were just lined paper and photos attached of all of us in the family and letters from all of the aunts and uncles and my family. He just sat there and read the letters from everyone and he had tears in his eyes. It was really a nice gift and it cost me around 20-25 bucks in the end. He is 53 now and he still brings up the gift he got when he turned 50.

Book her a facial or pedicure treatment at your local beautician. Check the nearest ones in the yellow pages. This is a present that works wonders. I just tried it on my big sis. Shes 45.
