Having problems with toilet training...she's 6 months now, if we go out/go to bed she always has accidents in the house. Ignoring the bad and praising the good doesn't appear to be working,,,which is what we were advised to do. We used a crate at the beginning but we recently got rid of it as it didn't seem to matter, she'd still "go" in it. To make matters worse, if left on her own for a few hours, she plays with her own poo, and I end up spending an hour cleaning the kitchen!!! Help me please!!!!!!!

I don't know why some answers reek of sarcasm when I'm asking for advice??
I can't keep a lab in a cage for 8 hours when I go to work. She's confined to the kitchen (- easy clean surfaces) not left to "roam" the house when we're out/in bed. And plus, when I'm at home there are no accidents? Any one with some helpful imput would be much appreciated! :o)

How often do you take her outside? How long is she left alone? If she hasn't learned any bladder and bowel control she might still need to be taken out every hour or so.

Does she just get to roam free when you are not around? Confine her to a small area and cover it with newspaper or potty pads. Eventually you can start reducing the covered area as she gets used to going on them.

Punishing the bad and rewarding the good will always work. You just have to be firm and dominate with your dog. You have to be sure to reward and punish in the middle of the act. A second too soon or late is useless when praising your dog. Dogs can only associate praise and punishment with what they are doing in the moment.

Buy a crate from your local pet store, that's only big enough for him to stand up, sit down, and turn around in. Whenever you are not able to supervise the puppy's every move, crate him. As soon as you take him out of the crate, take him outside. When he goes outside, praise him like he just won the lottery. With persistence you will start to see less and less accidents in the house, and soon there will be none. If you are totally set on letting him go in the house, there are numerous cleaners at petco or petsmart made especially for that.

maybe you should ask your vet for advice. They might have better suggestions. Also, I agree..try the crate again and make sure you take them out on a regular basis and praise good behavior. Also say words like "go potty" everytime so they associate that with going out to potty.

One of the things the crate is useful for is keeping the "mess" contained!!!!!!

I would rather clean the crate than the enitre house!!!!

IMO..an hour cleaning the kitchen is not "easy" to clean!!!!
