Oh wow that's a cool position. You run your own country. You talk to god.... He's even on speed dial. You get to ride around in the pope-mobile. Go to heaven, directly to heaven do not pass hell. You can toss out old rules and make up new ones. You can declare war on anyone with other belief systems.. You get the cool outfit and don't even have to dress yourself. Everyone wants to kiss your jewelery.

The benefits of being the Pope are far and few between. The Pope must live an exemplary life of holiness and service. He's going to be unpopular with someone, no matter what he says or does, so he has to be able to take criticism without letting it disturb his peace of mind. He's expected to take the lead when it comes to speaking out against war, crimes against humanity, and matters of sin.

He's got to have the skill of a veteran diplomat, the patience of a saint, and the strength of twenty men. He has to have a smile and a word of encouragement for the people who constantly surround him. And most of all, he has to embody the paternal love of God the Father, the sacrificial love of Jesus, and the wise love of the Holy Spirit.

Oh yeah, the benefits of being the Pope. When he dies and stands before God, he gets to hear the words, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant." You can't ask for a more glowing recommendation on your resume than that.

Benefits? Running a church comprised of 1 billion people who span the gamut from half-insane fundamantalists to half-crazy liberals? No thanks!

The Holy Father is a bishop, but he has certain privileges that other bishops do not have. When exercising his role as teacher of faith and morals, and speaking deliberately "ex cathedra" (from his position in the chair of Peter), he may make infallible decisions about Catholic dogma. This prerogative has been exercised exactly twice in history -- to define the dogmas of the Immaculate Conception and the Assumption of Mary.

The pope also has enormous influence as teacher, and his encyclicals, speeches and apostolic exhortations are seen as important, if not definitive. In other words, you will get away easier by ignoring a papal encyclical than by ignoring a dogma. The Holy Father is a powerful symbol of unity for Catholics -- which we call the Petrine charism. or gift of Peter (Matthew 16:18). Whether we agree with everything he says or not, the Church revolves around him. The Holy Father also has the power to order changes to canon law, which is the legal system that governs Catholics. And he has the sole power to beatify and canonize persons for sainthood.

There are more privileges, but this should get you started.

First the misconceptions:
You are the only Pope living, you have all the time in the world and no job, you are independently wealthy.
Yeah Right now the truth:
You are ALONE as far as you have no person other than Christ to lean on truly, you have no time to call your own, on duty 24/7 until you die, extremely important responsibilities, a vocation not a job. You own virtually nothing. What are the advantages? Thanks be to God that anyone accepts the Papacy.

For one, you are the leader of the biggest religious organization in the world. Lots of power and financial capabilities. Almost every country respects and fears you in some extent and you can probably tip the balance of the world.
