An Illinois teenager whose appendix ruptured at sea, hundreds of miles from help, got safely to shore Tuesday after an unusual rescue in which the Navy airlifted her from a cruise ship for emergency surgery.
Laura Montero, 14, of Albion, Ill., fell ill aboard the Dawn Princess cruise ship off the coast of Baja California. The Bahamian-registered ship sent out a distress call Friday that was answered by the USS Ronald Reagan, which was on training maneuvers about 500 miles away.

Yeppers, saw the report on CNN and was proud as punch... being a former HSL / HS crewman & rescue swimmer.

I like someone's point that President Reagan was a lifeguard in his youth... a fitting tie in.

To the fool who said "what a waste of resources"... I hope YOU are out at sea someday, PRAYING for rescue or assistance... You'll sing a different tune when you see a Navy helo ready to take you to a Haze-grey ship with medical facilities.

The Reagan was out doing regular training exercises out of San Diego... and the "law of the sea" dictates that any ship who CAN lends assistance to those in peril on the sea. And we Rescue Swimmers PROUDLY wear the motto "So Others May Live"...

Applause to the crew of "The Black Knights" of HS-4 from NAS North Island.

I agree with milty12345, you need to reword the question. I thought at first you were saying that Ronald Reagan had come back from the dead ala Elvis. lol. Yes, I heard the story on the news this morning. They definitely saved her life!!!

I'm pretty sure that the USS Ronald Reagan is a ship.

The way the question was worded made me think he came back from the dead or was perhaps a ghost helping sick kids or something. :)

One of the things that make those who wear the uniform different is that they will do anything it takes to respond to a cry for help.

I thought it was pretty cool. Wish they would put more things like this in the news about the Military.

He was the best President in my Lifetime. I'm glad to see his namesake is living up to his name.

About time that tub did something useful instead of cruising around threatening the world.

Good PR.

Ronald Reagan was a lifeguard. I saw a documentary that said that at the end of his life he remembered being a lifeguard as a young man, that it was what he was most proud of, but that he didn't remember being president. Its fitting that the ship was named Ronald Reagan.
