Although the current generation has been taught that self-esteem is the be-all and end-all, I believe it's very much possible to do a great amount of good for the world, regardless of how you feel about yourself. However, the more you love and help others, the more you will be able to feel like you are a person who is valuable and loved, as well.

Too many people focus on themselves first, and then never get to the point where they actually DO something that positively impacts the world.

No. If you can't love and accept yourself then it is hard to do that in others around you. In the case where you don't love yourself you may think you love others, but it's just something surface - no depth, no emotion.

Yes you can but it is slippery ground. No self love means that the quality of love and care you have for others becomes questionable.

Eh. Immediate family ~ possible. Romantic love and friendship ~ I think you can obsess on others and convince yourself it's love but until you accept and love yourself I doubt it's truly love.

Have known only a couple of people who seemed to hate themselves but were loving and kind to everyone else. It was very sad that they couldn't see what tremendous human beings they were.

Edit--Sophia has a great point.

The energy that is our soul is love.
If we do not love ourselves this is because the ego is more dominant than spirit.

Someone who does not love themselves, may find someone who they feel love for.

But for the love to grow that person must learn to love themselves again

Love grows by giving. The love we give away is the only love we keep. The only way to retain love is to give it away.
