First off, do you know what country your PS3 is from? Also, what region are your PS2 games?

Let's say you have a US PS3 and a Japanese PS2 game, the PS2 game will not work on the PS3. PS2 games are still region locked. PS3 games are not region locked, so you can play any PS3 games from anywhere on any PS3 from anywhere.

The region lock also applies to DVD and Blu-ray movies.

Just so you know, only the 40 gb doesn't play PS2 games. The 20, 60, and 80 can play PS2 games. The 20 and 60 are the best at backward compatibility because it has the emotion engine, which was used in the PS2. The 80 gb uses software emulation, so it can't play as many PS2 games as the 20/60 PS3 versions.

If you have the 40 gig PS3.....you are out of luck, no PS2 emulation.
If you have the 80 gig PS3 then you should be able to play about 80 % of the PS2 games through emulation software.

If you have the original 60 or 20 gigs PS3 then you should be able to play over 99% of the games through the emotion chip set that these systems have but were removed on the 40 and 80 gig models.

unlike DVD films computer games are not region coded (although strangely they do have the region codes on them) so the ps3 should play games irrespective of their country of origin. bear in mind the the ps3 will not play all ps2 games-only those that satisfy the technical requirements checklist (about 95%). it is worth checking that the update is for the playability of ps2 games and not for example the machines ability to upscale DVD movies. some machines play ps2 games straight out of the box-others need an upgrade (which is always risky-a freind of mine who is a techie always advises his customers against downloading into games machines). if you still have problems then give the sony ps3 helpline a call.

This question is an often one, so that's my cut & paste answer:
1). 20GB has no chrome trim, no memory card reader and no wi-fi. Not manufactured anymore. Has the best backwards compatibility with PS2 games due to Emotion Engine (PS2's CPU) and Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU) installed.
2). NTSC 60GB has the same backwards compatibility as 20GB version, also has memory card reader and wi-fi. Has a chrome trim.
3). 80GB - extended memory, but reduced backwards compatibility with PS2 games, it has only Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU). Around 80% of PS2 games can be played. Available only in NTSC regions.
4). 40GB - can't play PS2 games at all (all PS2 chips were removed), has 2 USBs instead of 4, no memory card reader, has wi-fi. Avalable in black and white colors. White is on sale only in Japan. Uses 65nm technology (lower power consumption). Improved cooling system. It's the latest version.
5). PAL 60GB - reduced backwards compatibility with PS2 games. it has only Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU). Around 80% of PS2 games can be played.
Wi-fi included in all models, except 20GB.

The 20/40 gig versions do not support ps2 game playing, if you wanted this you should have got the 60/80 gig versions.

It does say on the box on the playstation i think.

The ps2 feature was removed in the cheaper versions as sony didn't see it as a feature in great demand.

Edit: the 60/80 gig versions will play ABOUT 80% of all ps2 games.

If your PS3 is not from North America and you games are, they will not work. North American games have Region Code #1 on them.

If you got a 40GB model, you're out of luck on PS2 game support.
