Some people discover their "second body", which is called the astral body. Of those who do, most believe this body accompanies the individual throughout life and survive after death. This body is experienced when the material body is unsuitable for consciousness, such as during a trance, near death, or death. While experiencing this body, one is able to move away from the material one and explore a domain as if in a dream. This domain is sometimes called the astral plane. While there, people report the presence of spirits, some of which are guarding or guiding you, and others who roam freely. A shaman is able to explore the domain and contact such spirits and deal with them for the benefit of the community.
There are different ways to achieve this. The main method I use is self induced during shamanic drumming and rattling. You can learn more by getting a book such as Michael Harner's "The Way of the Shaman" or by finding shamanic practitioners in your area to explain it and teach you.
There is resistence among established religions, possibly because the free ability of laypeople to work with spirits threatens the jobs of the priestly hierarchy. And the irony is that religions rose from regular people no better than you or me, who were in contact with the spiritual domain.

Yes. It is where we go when we sleep. The Dream Land as it was always called by the Australian Aboriginal Peoples. We all go there when we sleep, but some of us meditate and go there other times. It is the place where ideas are born, where material people and objects are not completely formed and can be changed or ideas grabbed for creation.
Einstein Meditated every day to get his ideas on Physics. He grabbed these ideas from the Astral World.... which is often similar to ours, but it's not.

There are many "astral planes". They are simply alternate worlds that parallel our reality.
Through intense study, meditation and practice we can travel the astral planes. Some people believe we travel to alternate planes while we sleep.

Just a Smidgeon about it.
There is a Parallel Universe (s?) and you can Travel in that Universe Under The Holy Spirits Direction (Power?).
Don't think you want to do much Traveling AnyOther Way Except Through GOD (Holy Spirit)---it is Possible to do it Other Ways.

Astral plane is the invisible “other” world that is unseen from our physical/temporal world, another dimension of reality.
I've experienced it but now I believe its just another one of Satan's lies.
