It true, New York City is the safest city in the country. As native New Yorker, born and raised in the Bronx, I have seen a lot of changes in the last 20 years. This city is no longer "The Crime Capital of the Nation" as the late night comedians used to call this city. It is now the Safest Big City in American.

If you're still watching those movies from the '70s and '80s, and think that NYC is still is an unsafe city to live or visit, then my friend, I would suggest you come to NYC and see it for yourself. You'll see that the people here are much nicer that what's portrayed on the silver screen. Heck, you could even ride the subway at 4am and still not get mugged.

And if you still don't believe it, take a look at the link below.

Happy Holidays

I'm an Australian but have lived in London and visited there many times. Basically, London is a very safe city but like all very large cities, you need to be cautious and not take risks (ie getting intoxicated to the point where you are vulnerable). Don't walk around the less salubrious areas of London late at night (eg around Tower Bridge or south of the river Thames where there is a bit of gang culture). I have travelled extensively throughout the USA and have spent time in Miama and can assure you that London does NOT have the levels of violence that Miami (and other American cities) have. Unfortunately, the gun laws in America DO impact on the high levels of gun-related crime in America and statistics prove this. London is one of the largest cities in the world at nearly 8 Million and, considering its size, it is extremely safe. The police in London are very friendly and approachable. London has so many amazing places to visit and the Underground rail is incredibly efficient and extensive SANS the scary reputation of the NY subway. London is a great city with terrific facilities .. enjoy! The city is one of the most multicultural cities on earth and is like one big melting pot. However, there is (unfortunately) a noticeable CLASSIST society in England that is still alive and well which is not welcomed or experienced in Australia. British people can seem aloof (and sometimes rude) and have a distinct condescending attitude to Americans and Australians - if you can manage to overlook this irritating stance among the untravelled and uneducated minority of Londoners, then you will be OK. With a city of 8 Million, you can afford to be discerning, eh?

NYC is very safe. You can leave a club at 4:00 in the morning have breakfast and still see people walking around. Half of the people that answer questions on the NY board are from places up state or live in Long Island. Of course they live in NY (technically) but they are not from the city and have no idea what they are talking about.

We visit NYC several times a year. I have never had a problem. In the city or subway. People are friendly and always seem willing to answer questions, etc.

On time on the subway during rush hour, I was holding my sleeping 2 year old, standing. Several people offered me their seat. That doesn't happen in DC much.

yes, NYC is one of the safest cities in the country.

I should know I am a native NYer from the Bronx, and I have never been mugged, raped, or buglarized

Really depends where you are...

Remember the term safe is a relative term. For a large city NYC is very safe, but still 100 times more dangerous then most rural cities are.
