Here is what I do:
1. Scoop at least once daily, but twice is preferred.
2. Add litter as needed.
3. Dump and wash boxes at least once a month, but every 2 weeks is preferred.
NO matter how much you scoop, there are little crumbles and the litter just gets really smelly after about a month and reeks of ammonia and is full of bacteria. Your cat will stop using the box at some point.
You should have about 2 inches of litter in the box.. some cats want more some want less. You will learn from experience. Don't make it a chore, and there is no problem trying to streach the litter, just don't try to take it too far. Sometimes the cheapest litters are the best. You just want a nice unscented clumping litter.
Good luck!

Toxoplasmosis is very serious. My aunt's (in-law) sister was infected while pregnant. The baby had serious birth defects and was never able to a fully function person. She pretty much spent her ~20 year life in a bed being cared for. What happened was that they had two cats but her other kids found a stray cat and brought him home while their mom was pregnant. He was a new cat and they found out too late that he was infected with it. It's been said already, but if you have a cat who is infected prior to getting pregnant then you've built up an immunity that will be passed along to the child. No problems. If you get a new cat who is infected then there is a risk. I'd suggest not being around any new cats at all and staying away from any litter boxes at anyone else's house. But I wouldn't worry about tending to your own cats' litter boxes. My parents had cats before I was born. No problems at all (at least I think I'm fine!). I never asked, but I'm pretty positive my father has never changed the cat litter in his life. If I get pregnant I will have to keep managing the litter too, but I will be sure not to get any new cats. There's also a risk of it when dealing with raw meat. That's probably more of a threat than the cat version. As long as you had your cat(s) before you get pregnant everything should be completely fine. But if you're TTC stay away from the litter of any new cats.

I scoop the litter boxs( i have 3 cats you should always have 1 litter box per cat plus 1 so i have 4 boxes) every day. I do add more litter to them every day just a little to make up for what i scooped out. I completly change the litter boxes every 2 weeks I wash them with dish detergent and dry them and then put all new litter in them. I guess it kinda like when you flush the toilet everything is gone after the flush but it still needs to be completly cleaned once in a while.

I clean my litter box every other day. Of course, the litter box is in the basement.
I use cat litter made of corn and it is clumpable. Never flush the litter, as it will clog your pipes.
They tell you to dump out, clean and put in new litter once a week so you will buy a lot of their litter.
On top of cleaning my litter box every other day, once a month I:
1) Clean
2) Put the litter in a temporary container
3) Wash the litter box
4) Put the litter back in the litter box
Every other month I do dump all the litter and replace with new litter.

You can add a little liter daily after scooping but eventually (usually with a wk and half) the box smells so strong of ammonia from the cats urine (which is hard to scoop) that it needs to be dumped and new litter put it. Also, if you don't keep it clean your cat will stop using it, so its good to scoop daily and completely change once a week.

all I do is scoop out, and add more litter when needed. If you have a plastic bag in the litter box, I change that about once a week, because my kittens like to think that it's kitty litter...all torn up and all. Good Luck!

Eventually, you HAVE to dump the whole thing. You cannot scoop out ALL the little particles or urine and feces, and just adding new litter to that will result in a very unsanitary box. With one cat, you may not have to do it weekly, but you will have to empty and clean box well and refill at some point.

Cats have very sensitive noses. Plastic litterboxes absorb smells. If the box smells bad enough, the cat won't use it.
Cleaning the box every week ensures that your cat will keep using it.
Besides, even if it's not part of a clump, the rest of the litter has still had prolonged contact with what comes out of a cat. Eventually it will also smell.
