Buying one of these tonight for my 12 year old...What is your recommendation?

I don't use a mac, and don't really like the Ipod's propriatary nature (on paper, never owned one).

The Sansa

Aside from some intermittent freezing that MP3 player is a slam dunk in terms of features and value. It's plug and play too which is great and depending on which model you get you can expand the disk space with microSD cards.

The iPod has a huge issue with Fairplay/DRM that essentially forces you to use iTunes, and even goes as far as to make you buy the licenses for music you already own. Some CDs you already own might not work at all if they're old enough, it's really stupid. The Zune also has a little bit of this but not nearly to the same extent.

You could also look at Creative Zens which is what I use primarily and I like everything about them except for their packaged software, which you don't have to use anyways.

iPod is by far the most popular and it's so easy to use.

The "proprietary" format is true on all players. The good thing about the way Apple is doing things now is that you can pay an additional fee (only a dollar or two) and remove the DRM so it is playable anywhere. I don't know if this is going to stick around or not, but for now, it's a great thing. That way, you can download all your music for your iPod, and still be able to transfer it to wherever you want. What people don't realize about these players is that you are not restricted to music you purchase through their software. You can use your CDs and import them, too! If you aren't happy with the way you get your music online, just keep buying it in the store and import it into your computer later! Then, you have the original, as well as a digital backup!

iPod. I've had all 3. The sansa is alright, but with it's lcd display and severely limited memory, it falls by the wayside. The Zune is a terrific product...until you install the horrific software. Simply put, the ipod should satisfy your needs no doubt. People like to dump on the ipod simply because it's the most popular. Fact remains, ipod to digital audio player is what coke is to soda. It's here to stay.
