I am interested in joining the military to learn, get into physical shape, and help pay for college. But I really dont want to go to Iraq, I wanted to join the national guard because I thought they were only helping in the United States, but now they are Federal also.

Is there any branches that dont go to Iraq? Or gives you options to stay here and serve.

If there is let me know, or if theres options let me know.

Did you try this question before?

My answer is still the same. If you want to "serve," then join and go where they need you..

The military isn't a travel agent that it will send you wherever you want to go. The military isn't a fitness spa. And the military isn't in business to provide you an education. The military's job is to train you to serve your country and to have the best chance of coming back alive. If you don't learn that lesson, none of the rest of it will make any difference.

Some military personnel oppose the draft because they are concerned about the quality of people with whom they'll have to serve. They haven't seen the likes of you. I'm adding this post to my link of poster children for supporting the draft.

Options: I'd suggest the Boy Scouts... but their creed stresses country before self so you couldn't hack that either. You could run for office... that doesn't seem to require any sense of honor, duty, responsibility, loyalty, or patriotism.

Put yourself through school. Buy a membership in a gym. Darned if I want to spend my money on you... especially since it's needed to support Americans... I'm referring to those in the military.

The National Gaurd has always gone abroad. There are no guarantees, that's why the money is good, because you make sacrifices. No you don't get the option to stay and serve, you should maybe read up on the military before you do something like join. My son went to Boot Camp this last summer and people like you usually didn't make it through to graduate, and that would be humiliating!
If you join it should be to protect and serve your country, not wuss out and still try to get a GI bill.
Stand for something

actually no all of the services have a chance of being deployed..there are no more days of joining the guard and not doing sh*t. if you are joining to go to school let me tell you this right now, you are doing it for the wrong reasons buddy and i would advise you to go into debt rather than putting other peoples lives on the line cause you dont wanna owe money for school. im tired of all these kids getting in the military and thinking nothing is gonna happen i dont know how else we can tell you...the job of the military is th fight wars and kill people its not a 9-5 or a f'ing joy ride so either man up or dont waste anybodys time

As l sit here in Iraq right this very moment, l can tell you that every branch in the US military is here. I have been a sailor for over 22 years and l am here in the desert, hence my name for these questions being "SANDSAILOR". As already stated if you want to join the military just to pay for your college and you don't want to go to Iraq, then I will agree with the others who stated you are joining for the wrong reasons. You should be looking to join to defend the freedoms of our United States that everyone holds so near and dear to their hearts! If you are truly afraid of being deployed to a war zone and possibly being injured, then I suggest you look for student loans because no one in the military would want you as their backup in a firefight with that kind of thinking!!!

Everyone, even national guard! You would either be on water, land, or air. I do know, that our friend Anderson joined the National Gaurd in CA and he got a 2 year hold on not going when he firdst joined, but he did just get back from Iraq when he was in the Army. But word to the wise read you contract and read it well. People will say what ever they want to get you, and if it's not in the contract they do not have to give it to you.

You have NO business going into the military in the first place! Get Mommy and Daddy to pay for college or get a job!

Do you know how many losers I've heard say "I didn't join the military or reserves to go to war"? Well guess what junior... what is it that you think we're training for? So we can keep little cowards like you free to whine about the not wanting to pitch in and do your share!

HA! Yeah, if you are active duty in ANY branch of Military you can be stationed in Iraq. This includes Coast Gaurd. Not to fight necessarily but to "support". Also no matter what your "contract" says, you are the sole property of the U.S. Government and they will put you wherever they need. I joined the Army in November of 2001 right after 9/11 and served until November of 2004. I was a Paratrooper and my company was not deployed until 2 weeks after I left. So join if you want to but there is a saying in the Army... "My recruiter lied to me" ha! They will tell you ANYTHING to meet their quota.
NO REGRETS!

The best thing you can do is, find an MOS that uses more brain than muscle, but you should think about this why are you joining the military to be a soldier or hide from the mission of the forces

If you don't want to go to war, don't join the military. Even if you joined in peace time, there is no guarantee that it will remain that way.

If you want to get in shape, join a gym and workout. If you want help paying for college, there are plenty of grants and student loans that can help you. If you want to serve your country, join the military.

Afraid there are none. That is sort of the military's job, after all. I understand you want all the benifits that military service brings, but I think you are missing the entire point. Those benifits are merely compensation for the dangers and hazards those servicemembers endure.

No such thing as a free lunch.
