The 50 consecutive S.U. are more a test of endurance. They constant stress also generates lactic acid and causes fatigue.
The multiple sets & Reps is great for definition and muscle development. You do not get as fatigued, your body has a chance to recover between sets, and also clear itself of toxins generated by the exercise. Because there are less toxins, and a rest period, the body also has a chance to send nutrition to the stressed muscle tissue and provide for the growth you seek.
The 50 in a row is more for endurance than muscle growth.

The difference is that if you do 1 set of 50 you are pushing your muscles to the point of exhaustion and that is where you get the most benefit. If you do 5 sets of 10 you are just barely getting warmed up each set.

There might be, as you may feel that the last few of 50 would be really hard, while 5 sets of 10 with breaks in between are easy. So you may build more endurance dong sets of 50.
However, if you can do 50, then start doing them holding a weight on your chest. Hold enough weight so that doing 20 is really hard, and do multiple sets of that. Increase the weight as you get stronger.

Same muscles are used in both, but the 40th sit-up in a set of 50 is becoming a strain, most likely. So other muscles jump in to help, which means you are not isolating yoru abs anymore.
Whereas a shorter rep done more often allows rest and will focus the work-out on the deisred muscle groups.

the difference is the time in between. The continuing tention of 1 set of 50 is greatly different from 5 sets o 10. you keep stopping in the etween time giving that muscle time to rest. sot the tention is released.

5 sets of 10 requires resting the muscles in between and the effort of starting them again. More benefit.

Speed is important. Doing sets allows oxygen to return to your muscles when you stop. If you do 50 in a row, you are likely to improve Anaerobic performance and stamina.

If you do 50 sit-ups, your muscles will be more tired.
If you do 5 sets of sit-ups, you will have resting periods between the sets of sit-ups.
It's just pure logic.

there isn't...it's just better for your back if you do it in sets especially in the beginning when you're trying to build up your stomach muscles. But if u r feeling sporting you can do 50 in row.

when you make 50 in a row, you may loose concentration and just rush to finish them, but when you do series your mind thinks you are doing less, it sounds less work and is more likely you will concentrate in the right muscles and get better results
