My puppy is scratching my legs and arms. I cut his nails but then they are still sharp. He is a chihuahua mix so he is not going outside in this Buffalo, NY weather. What else can I do? I was gonna try to grind them so they are smooth. Or maybe paint them with something so they are not so rough?

All you need for grinding nails is a Dremel Tool...they are available at WalMart, Lowes, etc....or online..in my area they cost around $20 and they are cordless.
It's all I use for my dogs' nails...I do them all once a week.

There are a lot of online dog catalogues where you can get a "nail grinder". All it is, though is a dremmel tool with a sanding wheel on it!
Unless you have a lot of experience handling a dog I would not use a grinder, they are REALLY DANGEROUS! If your dog pulls, you can grind a nuckle off in an instant! Yours or the dog's.
I would suggest you get one of those nail files, after trimming with clippers, hit the nail a couple of times with the file to smooth. You will also want to get a small jar of quick stop, it is a powder that stops bleeding should you cut too close to the quick, which stings a little, but does not hurt too badly.
If you do cut the quick, don't worry, your dog won't bleed to death! Here is a website that carries the things you will need.

Take him to a vet or groomer every 2 weeks for a nail trim. Herew in Oklahoma I charge 5 bucks for a small dog (as long as he doesn't turn into CUJO when I get the trimmers out) a dremmel is good, but on a Chi, you could do MAJOR damage. I suggest using a good emery board and filing them at home if you cannot afford a pro. They are razor sharp after trimming because of the razor sharp trimmers. Use a nail file gently, you'll be amazed!

Dremel makes a nail grinder for pets.

But for a Chihuahua, you may be able to get away with a strong emory board or nail file after cutting them - try that first before spending money on a Dremel, since a Chi's nails are pretty fine.

Use a Dremel tool. That is what we use and it works like a charm!!!!

Do an online search and you can find all kinds of sites that tell you all about it.

Just search "dog nail grinding".

Standard nail clippers work fine too, but personally, I like the smoother edges of the Dremel. The dog really like it too!!!!

You can hurt your dog by trimming his nails, if you can't do it right of course.

Get them trimmed by the Vet.
