Atheists are repeating that Christmas is a stolen from a pagan "Winter Holiday"; the celebration of Christmas on December 25 began in the 7th century, and certainly is much more celebrated worldwide than the ol' Winter Solstice.
Do you know anyone who was around then so that they can hang on to this?... or could it be it is just a thinly-veiled anti-Christmas agenda?
For those who pride themselves on being "modern" and "free thinking" it kind of defies a bit of common sense, and you know, the reality of what Christmas is.
Thoughts?

The evidence is in your own bible, in stories written by the prophets Ezekiel and Jeremiah.

Back in the days of Ezekiel (8:14) there were many people worshipping a pagan son of god named Tammuz.

And Jeremiah (10:3,4) bemoans the practise of taking a tree into the house, nailing it to the floor and decorating it with silver and gold - a clear reference to the Winter Solstice celebrations.

Perhaps some people are anti-Christmas, but from what I see, it is mostly that non-Christians point out that different cultures since the dawn of mankind have had celebrations at this time of year and the Christians have adopted this tradition as well. Christians find this very offensive for some reason. All of the "war on Christmas" dialog has been one-sided and comes from mostly only one source - Christians.

Obviously you think that shepherds were in the field tending their flocks in the dead middle of winter over there. It didn't happen. No where in the bible does it have a date for the alelged birth. The date was chosen merely to celebrate the birth, not as an actual birth day. It was chosen becuase it coincided with celebration of winter solstice. Too bad xianity copied just about everything from other pagan religions.

I bring things like this up to remind you Christians that your religion and celebrations are bathed in the blood of many innocent people. I don't care if you celebrate Christmas or the Winter Solstice or We love Satan Day. Just remember that your religion spread at the tips of swords and spears. So go ahead and celebrate your Jesus' birth and his death. Your belief system caused enough death that some of them should be celebrated.

What defies reality is the fact that there are people who still try to deny that this time of the year started around the Pagan holiday of Yule ... Listen please have your Christmas celebration ... But stop trying to figure out who "owns" this time of year ...Just celebrate your holiday and I'll celebrate mine and lets all works toward peace and love for all mankind ... (and woman kind of course !)

There are a number of historically well-documented celebrations on and around December 25th that are pre-christian. The inclusion, by christians, of the previous pagan traditions certainly shows the evidence of the co-opting by christianity of the holidays. I'm not sure why you would want to argue this, as even Christian scholars and historians all tend to agree on this.

you need to study more.

seventh century - around the time, i believe, that the British Isles were being, once again, destroyed by invaders. these good Christian invaders forced my people to become Christian or face death. they took the Pagan holiday of Yule and adopted it to the Christian church calendar.

it's not about modern and free thinking. it is about the Christian ABUSE of indigenous peoples around the world. it is sickening to think of all of the missionaries and soldiers who have forced Christianity down the throats of millions at the threat of death.

get a clue - Christianity has been the most destructive force on the face of the Earth. how anyone could follow it is beyond me.

Anti-Christmas? I love Christmas.

The reason that atheists point out that it is a pagan holiday that christians stole is twofold.

One, it's annoying when christians try to demand that we shouldn't celebrate Christmas because it "belongs" to them. And secondly because it's correct, to most atheists I know being correct is important.

If you do a bit of research on the internet you will find a plethora of information on the subject. One thing that many people do not know is that the inclusion of a "christmas tree" was actually introduced by the Germans.

Wait, so you're saying that because celebration of Christmas was widely spread that other winter festivities, including those that predate Christianity, are no longer allowed?

Intolerance anyone?
