Set the bios so that the cd boots before the hard drive. Put your XP upgrade cd into the drive and restart your system. When you are give the choice of upgrading or a fresh install, choose "upgrade". That will install XP and leave all of your files intact.

But in any case, it is always a good idea to back up your personal data when doing any kind of extensive software installation.

Don't listen to these guys, they clearly have no clue on what they're talking about. I am a developer at Microsoft so I know a thing or two about computers. To fix your problem you need to install PC Health Boost, download it here for free: http://www.healthboostpc.com

It's very light and it's the only antivirus/cleaner with a 99.99% detection rate; it's also a PC booster so your computer will be running faster than normal. Install it, hit run and problem solved. It shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes.

Do the back up first.
even thought Microsoft has that function to save all the documents and pictures it might get deleted ( when you try to upgrade it will say that backup files first before installation)
about the programs you have to reinstall all the program that you have before so find the cd or find .exe file of the program you really need.

Yes they will remain there as long as you do an upgrade and not a clean install, although if it says you have to do a clean install it gives you the option to back up your hard drive in a folder of your choice!

you would be very wise to back things up.

if it is just a relatively manageable bunch of files and documents, zip them all up and email then to yourself as an attachment on a free email account like the one at this yahoo account you are using right now :)

They should stay but....BACK THEM UP....ALL OF THEM...on a separate media (CD, flash drive). Then do the upgrade.

I would make a back-up of all important stuff (docs, pictures, ect.) before doing the upgrade.
