Ok heres the deal. I have been fishing in Texas (brazoria county) for nearly a year. What is the secret? I cant seem to catch anything but bug bites and snakes, oh and those stupid crabs that take my bait. Any hints?

I was raised in Freeport and fished the Gulf Coast for 30 yrs, so I will try to lead you to some fish but you will have to hook em yourself. Im not sure what kind of rigging you have so I'll just give you a variety of spots to choose from. During this time of year watch for your cold-fronts to move through and try to plan your fishing trips right when it's moving through. Surf fishing is my favorite for Bull Red's this time of year using finger mullets for bait. I use to put out about 10 rigs along the surf past Surfside along the free beach area. If you have a 4x4 head out to the mouth of the river by following the shoreline at Quitana Beach. The mouth of the Brazos used to be one of my favorites because of the variety of fish I've caught there. I would set out some Bull Red lines and then fish close to the steep banks with some light tackle for Flounder. Whiting should be running good right now to. Just throw out some fresh dead bait shrimp on a small hook and fish the bottom for them. I use to camp out and fish the mouth of the river all the time . Its best to go out there during low tide because theres not much beach left to drive on. You have 4 tides there so you drive out there during low tide and fish the incomming tide until it goes back out. otherwise you will get stuck. About 1/4 mile before you get to the mouth of the river theres a place out in the surf called the blue hole. During August when the water clears up you can see the blue hole because of the deeper blue color. It's about the size of a B'ball court and about a 100yrds past the third sand bar. It's a great spot for Summer there. I also caught a 325lb Tiger shark out of there. There are the jetties also. The Surfside side as well as the Quitana side of the shore both have jetties. I personally stopped fishing on the jetties because I've lost nice fish in the rocks. I also hate getting hung up and loosing tackle. But you will get bites and catch a variety of fish there. The secret to fishing the jetties is to try to cast between the second and third sandbars. To explain better, if you were to walk from the beach out into the surf there are three major sandbars along this part of the shoreline. The first sand bar you can usually see during low tide. Sometimes the wave action can show you where the second one starts but they are about 80ft apart. When surf fishing you walk out to the third bar before casting out a 100yds or so. I also had better luck fishing the Quintana jetties over Surfside. Fish just past the third bar for Whiting right now. Your best bet for hooking Specks in the Summer months is between the 2nd and third bars. You can use a popping cork or fish on the bottom at the jetties. Just remember when fishing the bottom, use enough weight to keep your rigging still. When you reel in hold your rod and reel high above your head and reel in as fast as you can or you will get hung up. I could go on and on from Alligator Gar holes to a few Sheephead spots I'll tell you about later. Email me with questions 40yr exp

I hate to see anyone's question go unanswered, so I will give it a try..I am not from Texas, but you live near the Texas Gulf coast.....There has to be fantastic fishing near you....I would suggest you locate the local fishing piers, or public access areas, and ask the people who are fishing....Most will tell you tactics, and baits, and times to fish.....The public saltwater aquarium is a good place to learn...They have fishing seminars at most...(ours do), where they tell how to fish for various species, and what to use, and when.....The Rangers at the State Parks, are always willing to tell where the fish are being caught, and on what......Do a little research, and use the right tactics, and start catching fish....
