Christmas never was mentioned in the bible. Why? because it stems from pagan origin. We are not supposed to celebrate birthdays anyway. There are only two accounts of birthdays in the bible. Both of them were celebrated by unbelievers (Pharaoh & Herod) and christians were beheaded at each of these birthdays. John the baptist was one of them.

The birth of Christ is mentioned in detail in Matthew, Mark and Luke. We are never told to celebrate His birth, but then again we've never been told not to. I don't think it's a sin. December 25 was chosen by the Council of Nicea in about 324 AD. No date or real clues to the birth date of Jesus is given in the Bible, so the powers that were chose December 25 to coincide with a pagan festival of the beginning of winter. This was done for 2 reasons: to replace the pagan festival, and to ensure the early Christians would not be beaten or killed for their celebration.
Good Friday is not a big deal to me. Jesus died. So what? Everybody dies. Easter is a the big deal. Without Easter and the resurrection, the rest of it is meaningless.

Because the words "celebrate Christmas" is not in scripture that does not mean we cannot remember that He , came down to earth from His heavenly Throne and became a baby born in a lowly manger- if He had not been born into our midst, He would never have died for us, or rose to give us victory over sin and death. If it was "not special" why would shepherds and Kings have traveled miles to worship the Christ child. Just a thought. If His birth was not important, it would not have been talked about- in prophesies for years before in the OT- and in all four gospels.
EDIT- just read Jack of all trades answer- just a thought-here too- if Good Friday means nothing to you, then what was the point of His coming to earth at all- it was to die for our sins- granted the resurrection gives us victory over sin and death -but without the crucifixion the resurrection would not have happened.

The word of God teaches us how we are to worship, how we are to give money to further the gospel, how we are to evangelize, how to observe the Lord's supper, and everything else a Christian needs to know for their spiritual life, according to II Timothy 3:16. But not once does the Bible tell us to celebrate Christmas! We are told to remember his death, but never to celebrate His birth. That fact alone is sufficient for me.

The Christmas story is told in Matthew and in the other gospels as well.
As for the date, it has something to do with the position of the stars during that time. Astronomers figured it out. (I believe, but I am not sure.)
I do not really know, but I am speculating.
