Yesterday i was involved in a minor fender bender in california of which was completely my fault and i took full responsibility. I gave the other driver all my registration info and made sure there were no injuries to her which there werent. The damage to her back bumper was very minor and was mostly just paint from my license plate on her bumper with minor paint damage. The problem is that i dont have liability insurance until today and so i cant give her a policy number or anything till today. She knows this and said that was fine because her insurance company will probably just call mine. I'm wondering what if any the consequences will be for me not actually having the insurance at the time of the accident. I would assess the damage to her car to be no more than $1000 which is more than covered by the california minimum for liability. I am getting the insurance today but i;m just wondering if any consequences could arise? Thanks to all who answer!!!

Well, you weren't insured, so your new company isn't going to cover this accident. You're GOING to have to pay whatever it costs for her to fix the car. Most new bumpers can't be fixed, if they're plastic - they need to be REPLACED. Which can EASILY be $1500. Plus the car rental for three days. Expect to get a bill for $2,000.

You have NO legs to stand on. She'll go through her insurance, they'll pay the damages plus rental, then they'll come after you - not your insurance company, as you had no coverage for the accident - and you'll be writing the check.

The insurance that you get today will not cover the accident that you had yesterday, so you will be stuck covering the entire cost of the repairs. Had the police been involved you would likely be ticketed for failing to carry liability insurance and your car registration would be revoked.

You will not be covered under the insurance plan you just picked up. You will be responsbile for paying for the costs associated with fixing her car and any legal issues that may arise by not having insurance. In order to avoid the legal issues, you may consider contacting the person you hit, asking them to meet you at an auto shop, get a quote and pay her out of your pocket for the repairs. It's good you're getting insurance, since CA law is quite strict about driving without it. But having insurance today won't pay for what happened yesterday. When the person you hit contacts you, just ask them what the costs of their damage is, and send them a check for that amount. Your insurance won't be of any help for that one.

If you didn't have any liability, you're paying for the damage to her car. Further, you can be charged with being an uninsured motorist for operating a vehicle without the minimum coverage.

well at the time of the accident you had no insurance, so the insurance you are getting will not pay for that. you will have to foot the bill one this one.
