Hi

Assuming you are a Merican, it is very likely that your surname has been transliterated and/or anglicised on its way from where its original owners came from to where you are now.

Do you have any ideas where your ancestors came from? Do you have any written records of how your parents or other ancestors spelled it?

There is a Saint Alberga - you could be related?

Sounds almost of either Spanish or Italian descent because both the Spanish and Italian forms of the verb conjugate out in English to mean to lodge or shelter. It's possible that it could be the Italian form, but I'd venture a more obvious guess that it is the Spanish form of the verb and that your ancestors were from either Central or South America. Just seeing how you were originally born in America it would make more sense.

I agree with Rain. It might come from Spanish through an Old Germanic language like Visigothic.
The Visigoths ruled Spain for 200 years and the word "albergue" and words derived from from it is part of their legate.
"Albergue" in Spanish means hostel.
We also have the verb "albergar", which means "to acommodate" or "to have someone hosted at a hotel, hostel or home"

Alberga : The girl's name Alberga \a-lber-ga, al-be-rga\ is of Latin and Old German origin, and its meaning is "white; noble". Also closely related to the French and Italian words for "inn".

Albergo is a hotel in Italian, abergare is to harbour or to dwell, so something related to hotels or ships . . . shelter, etc.
I suppose it could have Arabic origins, but you don't say.

Sounds Italian, it probably comes from the Italian verb "Albergare", meaning "to stay".
