1. Both units update but if you have the PS3 networked it happens automatically. Advantage PS3
2. Plays BD, Games, Internet browsing, media storage. Advantage PS3.
3. BD player can be incorporated into a universal remote control and works easily with one. Advantage BD player.
4. PS3 looks weird sitting in a rack and can't be stacked with other component on top. Advantage BD player.
5. With so many operations being handled by the PS3 expect it to break down sooner. Advantage BD player (maybe)
6. You can get a BD player for $299 on sale and in order to get all the features on PS3 you need at least a 60 Gig player.(go for the samsung 1400 though. It has the feature set of the $699 Sony). Advantage BD player.
7. The only BD player with a hard drive is the BD media server by Sony. It hold 200 physical BDs and a Huge hard drive but it costs $3500.
If you are into games or want a convenient media storage or internet on tv then go with the PS3. It has enormous capabilities and has a great picture. If you want something that operates like most people are used to the the BD player has it's advantages.

I have the Sony Blu-Ray player, but to tell the truth, the PS3 is a better deal.
If you want to play a game or two, it's there, and who knows who will win the format war? You also have the on-line download of the Blu-Ray updates as you mentioned, but just FYI in case you get the Sony player, you can download the updates online and burn them to a disc. Then, you just put the disc in and the player updates itself that way.
Up to you of course, but if I had it to do over again, I'd have bought the PS3.

i would go for the ps3. there are a few deals out there that give you 3-5 blu rays with it. no the regular player does not have any type or storage or hard drive. and with the ps3 you will always have the option of getting games. there are quite a few good ones out now and the graphics are amazing.
hope this helps

I would go for HD DVD and not Blu Ray ;)
Putting that aside, get the PS3. It will be the most future proof player with updates, and also handles all titles very well, where the Blu standalone players tend to be buggy on some titles that have Java.

The PS3 has a lot of horsepower which makes it produce one of the best video images of all the BD players. It is what all stand alone players are compared to in the magazines - and the PS3 is usually superior.
Stand alone players do not have hard drives. (Why would they?)

No, it is not true. As long as you update the newest firmware then it should be OK.
