I am wondering , I left Ireland the other day to come home for Christmas.

I last had my stamp from immigration one month ago. Will they say anything if I come back after such a brief period?

They may feel I am working there?

I am not working there, I just have some friends there that I am wanting to revisit.

If your visa is still current then you -should- have no problem.

If however, there is any query about your visa, or the conditions of your stay; then you may have some difficult questions to answer.

Edit: I've just read the DFA site, as a US Passport holder you don't need a visa. You shouldn't have any problems.

Immigration does understand about Christmas visits.

Have you had your passport stamped anywhere that would show you have left Ireland? Assuming you have then your period of stay is clear.
The question when you return to Ireland will be really simple and that is how are you funding your trip? You are not working so you must be able to demonstrate that you don't need to work in Ireland.
What is the relationship? You say friends, but why is there such an attraction. There will be a question in the mind of the official (depending on which side of the border you land) as to whether you have a romantic attachment and there is a possibility of you attempting to settle without the correct visa/arrangements.
What are your future plans? You may have arrangements in place for a couple of weeks time and this is your last chance to travel for a while for instance. Take some documented evidence of your plans.
You must of course have your return ticket. Did you tell the official that you were staying for a period of time then extend your stay last time to a longer period. Then you will need to explain why because what will stop you doing the same again.
If you can answer the questions truthfully then you should be OK

Alot depends on how long your last stay was, for example if you were there for a number of months and then you are going right back again after Christmas then they will probably ask you questions at immigration control.

If you went for a week and are going back again for a similar time period then I don't see any problems.

If they feel you are abusing the system in other words you are there for an extended period of time and then you are trying to enter the country again, after such a short period, you could face questions like

~How can you support yourself here, if you are not working?
~And the way you have worded your question, I assume your stay was a lengthy one.
~What ties have you to your home country? job? property? etc to prove you are not a flight risk.

You shouldn't a have a problem returning to Ireland. If you were given leave as a visitor before, then your ppt will be stamped again with 3 months leave. If you haven't left the Common Travel Area (CTA) then your ppt should not even be stamped again.

If you answer honestly and say you were visiting and you're back to visit, there shouldn't be any problems.
