Admittedly, these movements pose potential threats to the church, but perhaps we would do better to look for the deception of the end-times where Jesus and the New Testament predicted it would occur: within the church, within groups that call themselves "Christian" but which actually preach a different gospel."
We agree. The apostasy that the Bible says will occur in the "end of days" is not something that is going to take place OUTSIDE the church; rather it is something that is going to take place INSIDE it. But how? - that's the question. To understand the dynamic at work here we must put what is happening to the church in a larger context. Too many people try to understand "last things" from only the perspective of RELIGION. But that's not possible.
There are other dynamics at work - political, economic and military dynamics - and all of them one way or another impinge on the church and the apostasy that is at work within it, transforming what we know as the ORGANIZED church into the monster the Scriptures say it will become. And one needs to be clear here: IT WILL OCCUR - as sure as the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, and NOTHING will stop it! The Bible says:
"Let no man deceive you by any means: for THAT DAY (i.e., the day of Christ's return, cf vs. 2) shall not come, except there come (first) a falling away (i.e., Gk., apostasia - or the apostasy of the church) first, and that MAN OF SIN BE REVEALED, the son of perdition;
"Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God." (2 Thess. 2:3-4)

I have been called as apostate by JWs. If accepting Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior makes me apostate, I am happy for that name on me.
Jesus Christ is the Truth, I will stay with Him.

The "apostate" is the "adversary" and apostacy is what the liar does. This may be applied to his followers not Christians that disagree with one another for various reasons.
Who follows the Adversary?
Some info -
Apostate and Apostasy as a word do not occur in the KJV or any number of bible translations or versions.
Here is 2Thessalonians 2:3 in the KJV:
Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
Nowhere is "apostacy" or "apostate" used in the verse.
"Falling away" is used:
Falling away is apostasia from which is derived apostacy and apostate.
Now here is some more info
Perdition
- Strong's Number G684 matches the Greek ἀπώλεια (apōleia).
1) destroying, utter destruction
a) of vessels
2) a perishing, ruin, destruction
a) of money
b) the destruction which consists of eternal misery in hell
no compare this:
Hebrew
1943 hovah ho-vaw' another form for 1942; ruin:--mischief.
1942 havvah hav-vaw' from 1933 (in the sense of eagerly coveting and rushing upon; by implication, of falling); desire; also ruin:--calamity, iniquity, mischief, mischievous (thing), naughtiness, naughty, noisome, perverse thing, substance, very wickedness.
Note: "ruin" and "falling" in the above.
Also there is a place in Genesis that hovah or hoba is used and this means "hiding place" (Gen. 14:15) and does not 2Thessalonians 2:3 say the man of sin will be revealed?

so the "hidden one" will be revealed as the son of perdition - a fake anointed (christ) one - a pretender to be savior.
Not everyone will see and understand. There will be a strong deception.

I think it is already here, and characterized by the description in Rev 3 calling it "lukewarm" I think it has come in in the last generation because the whole teaching of the gospel is different from when I was a child. The gospel I was taught has been replaced by "easy believeism" which says just say these words, and you will be saved. The bible teaches that there are 4 characteristics of the end time apostate church.
1. It will be a singing church
2. It will lack solid sound doctrine
3. It will teach everyone can worship in their own way
4. It will be accepting of the worlds ways. (Education, fashion, music, entertainment, etc...

Those folks who believe in the rapture will think that satan, playing his roll as the antichrist, will worship the wrong christ because:
The Rapture Doctrine
A Stumbling Block for Christians
Before 1830 you can find no mention of the Rapture Doctrine. That alone ought to send up a red flag. In fact, the word "rapture" is not in the Bible. So, where did this false doctrine come from?
In 1830 Margaret MacDonald had an evil revelation on her sick bed, supposedly from God, in which she was shown what would become "The Rapture Of The Church", among other names.
And, from The Incredible Cover-up by Dave Macpherson, Appendix A, you'll read:
"I felt this needed to be revealed, and that there was great darkness and error about it; but suddenly what it was burst upon me with a glorious light." - Margaret MacDonald (Spring of 1830)
MacDonald's revelation would have probably died with her; however, two preachers grabbed it, cleaned it up, and presented it to Christendom. Today, you'll hear many pastors promoting that false doctrine from pulpits.
Those rapture folks will be hanging their heads in shame and wishing the mountains would fall on them when Christ returns. Sad!

I am an apostate according to Jehovah's Witnesses.
Basically an apostate to them is anyone who was a Witness and now sees through their BS and openly says so.
As a matter of fact, I would be an apostate to any Christian, because I used to be one and no longer believe in the Bible or Jesus.
I should be the Apostate Pope!! Cool! Instead of the Vatican we could have the Viagra-in (Popes are quite old) which would be a combo strip club and shooting range.
I of course would have to set up a stage with new lights and....wait, did I say "new light"!! Wow, this is a great idea!
Any of you interested in investing in a sure thing?
UPDATE: Oldguy "It will be a singing church"???
Were in the h**l did you get that???

All of "Christianity" qualifies. Scripture is the offer of a marriage contract to man by YHVH. the rules are simple. Take His name, follow His rules. Believers followed Torah for 300 years after Messiah, until obedience was outlawed by the "Catholic Church". If you accept Scripture (which is the word of YHVH ) and you accept the sacrifice of the Messiah (Whose name was YAHOSHUA) and you follow their rules--- Rest on the seventh day, call the Heavenly father by His right name. You will be totally outside of all organized religion... But you will have accepted the Messiah, and salvation!!!!!

I could swear that what you're talking about could be about the church I used to be a part of, that I now consider a cult. They do teach "a different gospel" and their prophet has been quoted as saying that only thru him (this prophet) will you get to heaven. They also teach that men can become gods.
Interesting post.

the great apostasy happened when jan hus rebeled against catholicism in 1420.
only nobody much noticed at the time.
and now hardly anybody remembers.
the end times were the hussite wars. all of the apocalypse prophecies were fulfiled then.
but it didn't make much difference.
