Nothing. As long as the racist Republicans were quiet, or spoke in David Duke like code, the media left them alone.

Strom Thurmond and a whole boatload of old Southern racists were Republicans, and it was never mentioned under normal circumstances.
But when Republican Senator Trent Lott said our nation would have been better off if white segregationists had won the white house, this did become an issue.

Democrat Robert Byrd, is the opposite. He has disavowed his racist past, and he has apologized for it. He is now more egalitarian than most Americans, but the Republicans keep bringing up the fact that Byrd was in KKK back in 1945.

To answer your question;

Robert Byrd if he was a Republican would have been protested out of office, and every where he went. As a Republican I despised David Duke for trying to run under the banner of the GOP and his treatment was well deserved by members of both parties. But I still don't understand why Democrats condemns one person and supporst another who shares those same view points.

Let's see. This is a hypothetical question with no real answer... we can all predict what would happen though, and I bet you have a pretty good idea!

But, I have a somewhat different take on this. If he was a republican, he never would have gotten into office, so...... not much at all.

Always amazes me how liberals can get away with any old crap and sexist or racist comments, but conservatives are crucified if they say anything that can be taken out of context and manipulated to make them look bad.

Does 'phony soldier' come to mind?

LOL

Traditionally, in the old days, southern democrats were in part for the suppression of African Americans. This changed under LBJ and JFK.

Reagan and Bush, the other one, ran on what some would say were veiled racist issues ( e.g. Willie Horton ads) that splintered the once Democratic majority in the south, and now, most southern states are red because of this, in, combination with the fundamentalist christian movement taking hold in politics.

Truthfully, he would be cannon fodder (who isn't?). But he still wouldn't be a fallacy to either party. A mere strafe as he is now. It would change few or no votes. Isn't that what the parties want more?

The media would be all over him and the Democrats would kick him out of the KKK.
