And to show how much you love them, you don't utter a word of annoyance?

Well I've given up lending good books. I have no problem with loaning them lesser books, but the last time I leant a valuable art book to my best friend, it never came back.
She swears she gave it back to me but she didn't.
I don't think it was deliberate, and I don't know what happened to it, but I was really cut.
I've since replaced it and put a note inside it that it is a replacement copy and the purchase date, so if she sees it she'll know it wasn't the copy I Ient her. They've been out of print for years.

I let it go because she is important to me and I think it was accidental, but I don't loan out valuable books anymore.

I collect antique books and as you seem to be a fellow bibliophile , it's an opporunity to show off. My pride and joy is a huge and very beautiful calf bound volume of The History of Edward III printed in 1688. It's my pride and joy and has original etchings etc in it. Just showing off . :o)

I love my friends, and I LOVE my books. But I do not always love my friends enough to give them my books.
When ever I do lend out a book I always make sure it is to someone I know very well. Most of the time they understand my love of books and return them. However most of the time I have to nag people to give me my books back. I have been wating for one book for over 4 years now. I dont think I will be seeing that one again. ever.
I did get mad at someone once because they returned my book with only half of the cover on it. They bought me a new copy of the book, now they take great care of any books I loan to them.

The friends that I lend to and I have quirky reverences for books. Like every book is a jewel to be treasured. And if, for any reason something happens to the book, it is replaced. There is a used book store where I live that lets you trade a good condition used book for one in their store. I have found some really interesting ones there!

2 years ago I gave away my library of books... now I have just a handful...

My experience with lending books is that most of the time they were not returned... and I never said anything to the friends that did not return my books

At this point it doesn't matter since I'm unloading or have unloaded much of what I owned. [not that I ever owned all that much.]

You mean someone actually RETURNED a book? When I "lend" someone a book, I just assume I'll never see it again, with or without coffee rings.

I loaned out books to a friend (fiend) once & she sit next 2 me tearing out the pages she had completed, I asked her what she was doing, she said because I had already read the book there wasn't any need to keep the pages she had read.
It was an old Barbara Cartland Book, that I have never been able to replace.
Another friend (fiend) that were booklets by Zola Levett, about the Messiah, as well as cassette tapes, He keep telling me he would dub the tapes using his church tape dubber, but he kept putting it off until one day a few months later I asked about them, & he said he didn't have them & for me to get off his back about them.

I don't lend books anymore, people seemed to never return them. They cost too much money now a days!

well, first you have to realize that any time your property leaves your hands you no longer have control; your friend should respect your property though.
Before lending your stuff out, check to see how they treat their own like items first.
Now would I say anything to them...yeah I might comment on it (I'm sorry I didn't know it was stained), expect them to fess up and even offer to replace it...but I probably wouldn't really have them replace it unless it really damaged the book---
Now if YOU had borrowed the book from someone else first--shame on you for lending it out. Your friend lent it to YOU not your buddy. Someone needs to replace it.

i have stopped lending my books to people. i never seem to get them back, and i am very "particular" about my books. i will, however, purchase a copy for someone who is interested in one of my books. sometimes that becomes somewhat expensive. i have purchased 6 copes of The Four Agreements to give to away.

You need to tell them that you do not appreciate that you lent them them books and they returned them with rings on the covers... do not make a BIG deal,,, just let it be known, that you do not apprecitate it, and ask them not to do it again... just tell them that you would respect their stuff if they let you borrowed it.

if you do not say anything, then you will just be upset about it everytime you see the books and then one day you are going to blow up at a bad time.. so talk to them, but do not let them just blow it off as a no big deal... let them know you dont like that,,,,
